What? No mention of Tommy Tatertown defeating Doug Jones? For all those hifalutin credentials, none of them can make the claim!
Tommy T … … football coach
I am just happy to see anyone in government who isn't a career politician or lawyer.
Government of the people, by the lawyers, for the lawyers hasn't been so great. We need more engineers, doctors, football coaches and bus drivers in our legislature and executive. Save the lawyering for the judiciary.
You prefer laws penned by the unlettered, in short. I note that the man you are paraphrasing the political principles of, Abraham Lincoln,
was a working lawyer by all accounts, and a damned good one. He himself was paraphrasing another excellent orator, Theodore Parker, who studied law at Harvard before disenrolling in favor of the clergy.
Personally, I do not think education or credentials are the true
cause of the problem that irks you, the inability of politicians to understand the lives or needs of those they govern. That happens because they have never met them in a situation unmediated by the complex customs that work to separate the upper from the middle classes. Lincoln and Parker understood the needs of common people because they chose paths in life that obliged them to spend time with those had no family compound to shut themselves into. A good person becomes a good lawyer. A born asshole who "studies law" at Yale becomes neither good nor an actual lawyer through the exercise.
