2023 House vote for speaker

And McCarthy has now lost the 9th ballot. The final tally will probably be the same as the last one. Ignominously, it's now the most ballots needed for speaker since 1833. Ballot milestones still ahead for McCarthy (or other) to catch are 11, 12, 22, 44, 63, and 133.

Treasonous GOP'ers who voted to overthrow the 2020 election results, incapable of electing House Speaker... among their own party. Surprise!

Part of me thinks that this doesn't end without Stone Cold Steve Austin coming out with a steel chair and slamming it into Matt Gaetz's head to huge pop.

Procedural questions:
(1) Do Representatives have assigned seats, or do they move around at will?
(2) A few decades ago, did they not vote with buttons at their seats? Am I misremembering? Or was that system torn out?
(3) The Constitution says only that "The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers." Why can't Jeffries (or anyone) stand up and move that Members be sworn in without a Speaker?

Re: 3 - At present there are no Representatives in the House, only Representatives-Elect. They don't become Representatives until they're sworn in, and (apparently) only the Speaker can do that...

Or so I gather...

The 10th round is underway and this time Hern has been peeling off some votes away from Donalds, and could end up with more, but McCarthy will probably still have the same number.

10th round is another loss for McCarthy, and like last round, his total has dropped down to 200 as Buck again did not vote. 13 for Donalds, 7 for Hern and 1 present. The first round, McCarthy had 203.

At this point, it is worth noting that the GOP is not really arguing over who is the best person to act as the de facto leader of the House of Representatives. The most qualified person to be third in line for the Presidency, ensure the continuity of government if needed, and make sure that one half of the legislature works properly.

The GOP has for decades been committed to the proposition that government is bad, and must be stopped from doing it's job at all costs.

They're not fighting over McCarthy as a leader, but rather that he is not sufficiently dedicated to the task of destroying our representative democracy. The people standing in his way are not doing so because they have a better option for a leader. They all want to tear down the very institution they belong to, and Kevin's failing is that he still wants to keep it around for a bit.

OMG ! Gaetz votes for Trump as speaker. o_O
Back on topic,

Trump as Speaker? That would be glorious. The two things everyone knows about Trump is that he's a hard worker and is great at making deals.
Trump as Speaker? That would be glorious.

If republicans were really stupid enough to make Trump speaker it would be a spectral to behold. When he wasn't golfing or watching TV Trump would be on a vendetta against members of his own party. You could even see some moderates become democrats to get rid of him.
Imagine if someone like Pete Buttigieg said on FOX news it would be a terrible idea if the Republicans elected Trump as Speaker, followed by a few tweets from The Squad saying it would be the end of America...
I still haven't given up on my fantasy of Trump being Speaker. The scenario could play out like this - the GOP goes to Trump and doubles down on their threat that they stop paying his legal fees if he continues running for President. But they can't hurt his feelings so they offer him Speaker as a consolation prize. He'll grab it with both hands as it would likely piss of Pelosi and McCarthy and Trump can't be anything but a vindictive cunt. This also removes any obstacles for De Satan when he runs so basically everybody wins.

What can I say? I would really really love it if Trump becomes Speaker.

I have never lied on this forum and I'm not about to start now so I have to say this;

Matt Gaetz just gave me an erection.

Now please excuse me whilst I acid wash myself clean.

There's always Spironolactone if you feel that strongly about it.

Apparently there is a deal. And it doesn’t appear to have made any difference.

ETA: The deal was for adjournment. Jebus fucking Christ!

Yep, the big fat loser has now lost 11 votes, five today alone. Now tied for fifth most ballots ever needed.
