2023 House vote for speaker

You know, the Speaker is elected by the whole House. To me, that means that the whole House has the responsibility to find a candidate that can gather a majority behind him. Instead of stuffing their pieholes with popcorn and reveling in Schadenfreude, maybe Dems should reach across the aisle to find some sort of compromise.
I would think any compromise agreeable to the Democrats would involve neutering the batshit crazy faction of the GOP.

In theory... if over half of the GOP in the House didn't vote to undo the 2020 election. Pretty much you've got the far right wing McCarthites and then you've got the opportunitistic sociopathic wing of the GOP being lead by anal wart Matt Gaetz, who apparently want the right to be able to put a stranglehold on our democracy.

You look at the opportunistic sociopaths and there is one clear identity, they are mostly newcomer underachieving (in life and Congress) ultra right-wing populists. And they are demanding more of them get elected into gerrymandered safe districts... and both hands on the wheel to the House. And McCarthy continues slaking away power to them. Making one wonder if anyone in the GOP in the House will tell McCarthy to fucking stop it and then pull back their "moderate" support because McCarthy gave away too much. But even then, that'd likely only happen if self-interest rears its head and the Gaetz wing starts cutting in line.

And McCarthy has now lost the 9th ballot. The final tally will probably be the same as the last one. Ignominously, it's now the most ballots needed for speaker since 1833.

Fact check: it's only the most since 1859, when it took 44 ballots. But it is the most since the Civil War and the two-party system, during which there has been only one other speaker vote that took more than one ballot, which was the 1923 one, which was won on the 9th ballot. The current vote will take at least 12.

Today's session is underway.

Always need to be a bit suspect about photos on Twitter but this appears to have been posted by Reuters Picture editor. If you can believe blue checks these days.

There are 18 Republican members-elect who were elected in districts that Biden won. The Kevster is signing their political death warrants, and it will be no surprise if some start defecting.

Kevin McCarthy said:
Watch here and you’ll see some people who have been voting against me voting for me.
Well that is spin for "I still ain't got the votes."

What... does Jazz Hands count 2x? Also have the Macarena going through my head.

McCarthy has brought some back to him. But 3 votes down at the moment, can only afford to lose one more GOP voter. He isn't expected to win. But this at least provides "momentum". The only problem is, he is driving a truck into the side of dumbass mountain.

ETA: Up to 6 GOP votes against McCarthy. So McCarthy isn't there again. No one seemed to think he was. The question is, 5 or 10 or 15 GOP votes against him? Less than halfway, so 10?

Some new action today, starting with Bishop, McCarthy has been winning some previous defectors. I've counted three so far.

But that group of 20 or 21 have been opposing him for different reasons so who knows how many have been satisfied at this point. Hern and Jordan have also been getting votes. Seems there is a hardcore 4 or 5 that will always oppose McCarthy.

Donalds also switched to McCarthy.

And McCarthy has now lost this 12th ballot, but this time he was alive till the Gs.

So we are playing T20 Cricket, and we are in the final over. McCarthy is down by 42. In this vote, he has smack a trio of sixes and is all smiles. But he is still down 24 with only 3 balls remaining. And will need 6 wides or no-balls, to go along with his 3 more 6's to tie.

McCarthy is making so many concessions to the radicals of radicals, that a deal with the Democrats seems less likely than just about any hypothetical I can come up with.

Seems like 6 to 8 hold outs. This could also be the first vote he wins the plurality.

Interestingly, he lost while still winning over Norman who was an official member of the Never Kevins. The four other official Never Kevins remained true. That's Biggs, Gaetz, Good and Rosendale.

If some of those who didn’t answer still don’t answer by the end, does that reduce the total needed to win enough for McCarthy?

But either way, McCarthy has destroyed the office and handed power over to the radicals. It will be ugly the whole year long. If he does ONE THING they don’t like, they start this again.

That is a very punchable face. Just sayin.

GOP Rep elects Hunt and Buck did not vote. McCarthy is 5 GOP votes from Speakership.
