2026 Mid-Term Elections

I am seeing Scott Colomb ahead (by 28 votes) in <Checks Notes> Mississ <No, that can't be right; Checks Notes Again> Mississippi??

If Mississippi elects an African American Democratic Senator, 'historic' seems like too small a word to describe that.

The fact that it is even a close race is astonishing to me. And, I suspect, to Cindy Hyde-Smith, who must have seen defeat as inconceivable.

Of course, 28 votes isn't much. But that's with 97% reporting... It will presumably be a while before the final result is known.

Well, the Democratic part is. The previous two were Republicans.
...and were elected in the 1870s. That's quite a time between drinks.

My faith in American democracy is restored, but not competently.

Well see if the democrats actually do something. Or squander the opportunity.

I'm bummed about Mary Peltola.
But it takes a long time to count votes in rural Alaska.
There is still hope.

Update:
  • ME - Troy Jackson - 54% - 46% - defeating Susan Collins
  • OH - Sherrod Brown - 50% - 45% - 3% - he's returning to the Senate after losing in 2024: 46.5% - 50.1%
  • NC - Roy Cooper - 59% - 39% - 1%
  • SC - Annie Andrews - 51% - 47% - 1% - defeating Darline Graham, Lindsey Graham's sister
  • IA - Josh Turek - 51% - 46% - 3%
  • KS - Adam Hamilton - 51% - 46% - 3%
  • TX - James Talarico - 55% - 43% - 2% - defeating Ken Paxton
In Mississippi, Scott Colom D is ahead of Cindy Hyde-Smith R Inc by 43 votes. However, there are plenty of votes that remain to be counted, and those votes may make the final count significantly different. (Inc = incumbent)

In Alaska, with 75% counted, Dan Sullivan R Inc is ahead of Mary Peltola D by 0.81%. Another Republican in the race has 2.16% and a second Dan Sullivan has 1.66%.

In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed D beat MIke Rogers R 52% - 46% with a Libertarian getting 1%.

R-to-D Governor positions:
  • OH - Amy Acton - 52% - 44% - 3% - defeating Vivek Ramaswamy
  • GA - Keisha Lance Bottoms - 54% - 46%
  • IA - Rob Sand - 55% - 45%
  • TX - Gina Hinojosa - 53% - 46% - 1% - defeating incumbent governor Greg Abbott
  • NV - Aaron Ford - 52% - 44% - 3% - defeating incumbent governor Joe Lombardo
The third numbers for OH and TX are for Libertarian candidates.

In Kansas, the Democrat is ahead of the Republican by 0.6%.

In Alaska, with 75% counted, the Democrat is at 49.2%, but the other three candidates are Republicans, and if their voters made other Republicans their next choices, a Republican might win.

A ballot measure to repeal Alaska's top-four ranked-choice-voting system is losing by 52% with 73% of votes counted.

This wasn't a tsunami, it was a natural disaster.

Ohio:
Gerrymander District 15 (diluting of Franklin County) - Democrat is leading the incumbent by a lot.
Gerrymander District 7 (diluting of Cuyahoga County) - Democrat is leading the incumbent by enough.
Not as Gerrymandered District 10 (diluting of Montgomery County) - Democrat is leading incumbent.
Not as Gerrymandered District 9 (diluting of Lucas County) - Incumbent Democrat is leading.

Ohio is heavily gerrymandered, and the Democrats look to be walking away with more than half of the seats. Additionally the other state wide offices are falling to the Democrats. The Democrats didn't take the Legislature because that is hideously gerrymandered and it is effectively impossible to undo.

Not really, but Derec has to Derec. If El Sayed tried to do that, how easy do you think re-election would be? Impossible.

The big tent is back! Conservatives in Kansas, Texas, South Carolina, progressive in Michigan. The big tent means pragmatism and solid party leadership. Not getting ahead of ourselves. Remembering the results of the election were a condemnation of Trump, not a call for much else. Regardless, Operation Filibuster Proof 2028 is now a go. Having Mississippi and Alaska would make it easier!

2028 is interesting as it is a much nicer map for the Democrats. Lots of "safe" blue states, and potentially vulnerable Red Seats. Need four. Fetterman is up for re-election. I've got to think a primary could happen there, if he doesn't drop out entirely. Meanwhile:
1) Rand Paul v Andy Bershear?
2) Chuck Grassley v ? Iowa apparently is available and Grassley is the old guard and the old guard could be at great risk. He might drop out.
3) Ted Budd v ? North Carolina had their main guy Cooper do his thing. I don't know if NC Dems have a Cooper-lite.
4) Ron Johnson v ? Wisconsin will be a heavy target for the Democrats. Johnson effectively has no mandate. He was Mr. Independent, then Mr. bootlicker. If he doesn't run, this seat defaults to blue. But it needs to be a Midwestern candidate, not an El Sayed.

I'd say these are the four possible takedowns, but it would also require the Dems hold onto Mississippi which will be decided sometime in 2027 and Alaska, which will take 2+ weeks to just get the votes in.

Poor Derec.
I recall a town hall where someone asked perhaps this very person, whether they would support the Muslim brotherhood.

The response was actually fucking hilarious because by the end of it, the Islamic candidate at the town hall was like "I value the constitution over that, because I'm not a toolbag" in so many words and when we got to the reason why the toolbag was worried it was specifically because *the toolbag was a religious fundamentalist who put their own religion above the constitution*.

Im wondering if that's not just a universal thing, where everyone who accused anyone else of religious fundamentalism on the grounds that some accused person's religion is more important to them than their commitment to their society, it's the accuser who places their own ideology above the importance of their society speaking through.

Every.

Single.

Time.
