43% of Republicans think Trump should have the power to shut down the media

https://www.thedailybeast.com/new-p...nt-to-give-trump-the-power-to-shut-down-media

Gosh, it's almost as if all that constant bleating about the first amendment was nothing more than rank hypocrisy.

I don't think it's hypocrisy, so much as a difference in interpretation.

They think that the phrase 'universal human rights' means that the right applies to absolutely every single human, without exception. And they also think that 'human' is a narrow category that includes only people who look, think, and act just like them.

Oh look, the usual conservative "what-aboutism" tu quoque argument from someone who gets his panties in a bunch anytime someone compares him to conservatives. Huh.

First, there's the tu quoque thing: someone else being wrong doesn't make you right. That's not how that works. If you stopped watching conservative propaganda, you might figure that out.

Second, Alex Jones agreed to terms of service and violated said terms, and in your mind that's exactly as bad as shutting down the entire media? Really? That's "just as bad" (or worse) to you?

Your link also says:

But swaths of self-identified Democrats and Independents supported anti-press positions as well. According to the survey, 12 percent of Democrats and 21 percent of Independents agreed that “the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior”.

But we already know 85% of Democrats figure the First Amendment doesn't apply to corporations and Congress should have the power to censor the media outlet that made "Hillary: The Movie".

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/17/AR2010021701151.html

Of course there may be about 3% who for some reason think whether the censor is the President or Congress makes a vital difference, and another about 3% who for some reason think whether you censor somebody by shutting them down or just by banning them from broadcasting what they want makes a vital difference. But that still leaves let's say 33% of Democrats who trust president Beeblebrox as far as they can throw him but were perfectly okay with giving Obama the power to shut down media, and 34% of Democrats who are nothing but self-congratulatory posers. What the poll's 43% to 12% difference in the parties shows is that either (a) a great many of those polled took the phrase "the president" to mean "the current sitting president, Donald J. Trump", or else (b) Democrats are systematically even more inclined than Republicans to maintain their positive self-images by lying to themselves about whether they give a rat's ass about other people's free speech rights.

Oddly enough, this is happening while Alex Jones is being shut down.
I can assure you Alex Jones is still running and doing programs.
Yeah, Moore-Coulter as usual.

Poll indicates the nearly half of Republicans want to silence media news outlets.
But, but, but Alex Jones!!!

A parallel with the "blacks can be racists" for media censorship.

Shut down by BUSINESSES, and I know what libertarians feel about business leaders and business managements -- that they have a right to do whatever they want.
The invisible hand of the free market smacked Alex Jones in the face, and now the alt-right wants protections from the free market. It's pathetic!

What the poll's 43% to 12% difference in the parties shows is that...
...nearly half of polled Republicans are for silencing the media for reporting the news and half are against that, meanwhile 7 out of 8 Democrats are against that.

Spin the numbers as you choose, but don't expect us to believe that the difference in opinion is merely 31%! From Democrats, it is a fringe position to hold. For Republicans, its a Trump supporter position to hold.

Alex Jones is a conspiracy theorist, con man who sells shit like nutritional supplements and survival gear to naive people. He's certainly not a source of actual news. Some of what he says has the potential to incite violence, so I can understand why some private corporations no longer want him associated with them. I have to wonder what took them so long, considering that death threats have been made against some of the people he's attacked. I'm glad he's being sued for defamation of character too.

And, what a surprise. The Republicans that want to see the media shut down by the president mentioned CNN, WaPo and the NYTimes. I wonder where they ever got the idea that these weren't real sources of news.

Where are you getting that? They said they were for silencing the media that are "engaged in bad behavior". The "for reporting the news" characterization is your own personal gloss; it's not something you have evidence for.

meanwhile 7 out of 8 Democrats are against that.
7 out of 8 are against Trump getting to silence the media for engaging in "bad behavior". If they'd been asked during the Obama administration the numbers would have been different. Nobody wants his own ox gored.

Spin the numbers as you choose, but don't expect us to believe that the difference in opinion is merely 31%!
Excuse me? You're the spin doctor here, Dr. "for reporting the news". And I'm not the one inviting you to believe the difference in opinion is 31%.
It was Underseer's link that did that -- don't blame me for "reporting the news". I was perfectly clear to anyone who read my link that the actual difference in opinion between the parties regarding free speech is merely 9%.

From Democrats, it is a fringe position to hold.
"It"? Well, duh, obviously "A Republican should be in charge of deciding who gets censored" is a fringe position for Democrats. "A Democrat should be in charge of deciding who gets censored" is a fringe position for Republicans. Whoop de do. Believing the president shouldn't get to censor people when it's a president you hate isn't exactly a shining badge of integrity.

For Republicans, its a Trump supporter position to hold.
For both Republicans and Democrats, support for letting the government silence the media is an extremely non-fringe position. Support for the other side's free speech rights is a fringe position in both parties, and it's fringier in the Democrats. Only 24% of Republicans support free speech. Only 15% of Democrats support free speech. 85% of Democrats are for authorizing the government to define bad behavior and silence media that engage in it. The spectacle of Democrats calling the Republicans hypocrites for their anti-free-speech positions blows irony meters to smithereens. Quit worrying about the mote in your neighbors' eye and get the beam out of your own eye. This means you. I've read your posts. You are one of the non-fringe 85% who advocate censorship.

Personal gloss? There is an ostrich that wants its hole in the ground back.

You can feel free to support that assertion.

Excuse me? You're the spin doctor here, Dr. "for reporting the news".
Trump and his supporters rail on about "Fake News". The media hasn't reported any "fake news". "Fake news" was a term that was coined regarding bullshit headlines in social media meant to troll social media users, and was in no way accurate. Trump and his base use the term "Fake news" about reporting of his own Tweets.

From Democrats, it is a fringe position to hold.

This was your second opportunity to present an argument that Democrats support censorship of the media if a Democrat is President. You again didn't present anything other than a baseless assertion of Moore Coulter.

For Republicans, its a Trump supporter position to hold.

That's three times now.

If 43% of the deplorables want Trump to be able to shut down media because they criticize Cheeto, would they be supportive of a future progressive president being able to shut down corrosive, divisive and lie filled news organizations like Fox News, Breitbart, Glenn Bunk, Alex Jones and other right winged loonies, liars and louts?

I suspect that the lumpheads that answered that survey in the affirmative didn't think the whole question out before they blurted out their spite filled opinions.

I call bullshit. The statistic quoted isn't 43%. It's 13%. But even that I think is too high. Only fascists or militant leftists want this, and how many votes did parties like that get in presidential elections? Not that high.

Here's the clue: "according to a new public opinion survey conducted by Ipsos and provided exclusively to The Daily Beast".

I think this is a poll intended to produce an outraged reaction. We haven't seen how the survey was conducted. It's all taken out of context and served up to be as juicy as possible. When I'm asked in surveys what I vote for, I don't tell them. I typically don't waste my time answering surveys. Because I find it boring. Which makes me wonder what kind of demographic takes their time to answer them.
