For some reason Ed.D more than Ph.D's seem to like to sign as Dr so'n'so. Just an observation. And there are Ph.D's in education. They are both Doctor level but different career tracks and different degrees.

My experience dealing with our town public school system is that Ed.D's use the Doctor labels while trying to trick parents or intimidate them into accepting a defective IEP for their kids.

I've also noticed that at least our public school spends and hides somewhere in the budget money for employees to get their Ed.D's and then those employees just skip off to become some high muck-a-muck at a different school system.

I don't know if any other industry pays so many employees to get Ph.D's or equivalent just to have them run off and work somewhere else.

I can understand why someone who has gone through the usually arduous process of completing graduate studies and writing a dissertation would refer to themselves as "Dr". Given the common understanding of the title "DR' to mean a physician, even though I have a Ph.D., I don't use the term because I am not a physician nor do I care about titles.

I do think given the common understanding, the use of "Dr" for academics can be misleading. But in terms of pressing issues in the USA, I think this ranks behind whether blue or black ink should be used to endorse checks.

The fact someone felt the need to write an OP-ED piece means someone's life is pretty boring and easy. Why any reputable newspaper would print such a waste of time indicates a complete lack of more available and interesting OP-ED pieces.

When you are in professional circles are you referred to as Dr. Dog?

I considered going for the Ph.D but ultimately stopped with the MBA cuz I didn't want to be a poor grad student for any longer than I had to.

What gets me, though, if there's a problem with academics using the honorific, why is this being placed on the shoulders of exactly one woman? Academics have been calling themselves doctors for oodles of years. Now, it's an issue, and only for Dr. Biden?

Why not during the entire run of, say, Bones, the TV show where half the characters had or were working on their doctorates, but not medical degrees?

Seems like using the full weight of Stolen Valor to say McCain wasn't in the military because of a wrong date on his discharge paperwork. (Like, say, the first attempt at my DD214, which said i got out of the Navy on 31 November, 2000...)

There is something terrifying to right wingers about educated, accomplished women that move into the White House. We saw it with Hillary Clinton, we saw it with Michelle Obama, and we're seeing it again with Dr. Jill Biden.

Nude photo shoots aside, the outgoing First Lady was perfection for the wingers. Subservient to her husband, largely silent on important issues, and arm candy when needed. Her job was to stand there, look pretty, and maybe preside over the Christmas decorations every year.

Anything beyond that is too scary for them to comprehend.

I’m not the one who wrote a WSJ opinion piece denigrating an academic for using her rightfully obtained honorific. And I’m not the one trying to defend the ignorant view of honorifics. And I’m not the one who doesn’t understand the origin of the word “doctor”. So if you’re looking for triggered people perhaps start there.

And it doesn’t matter *why* she pursued the higher degree. As she earned the honorific it is hers to use.

If your argument had any substance you wouldn’t have to resort to an ad hominem.
