Do you honestly think that the US education system taught the president that the continents were named for an Italian map maker? Or that indigenous people here are referred to as Indians because Christopher Columbus et al was too poorly informed to realize that he hadn't gotten halfway to India?

BTW the US public schools were not too bad in the 1950s.

Fun fact, he wasn't poorly informed. He was thoroughly well informed. Contemporary simple maths proved it. They knew the moment they spotted the Caribean. Pretty much everyone knew. Everyone except Columbus.

Colombus was just really stubborn and convinced that he was smarter than everyone else. Most people aren't aware that Europeans, including Isabella, were appalled about how Colombus treated the natives. He was, at every given opportunity, explicitly told not to enslave the natives. He was explicitly told to cooperate with them. Not to conquer.

He was repeatedly stripped of wealth and power as punishment. Eventually they took it all away from him and he was forbidden to set foot in the colonies. He died in Valladolid, moping about his treatment by Spain.

Colombus was a very strange man. Greed doesn't explain it. He kept making the worst possible choices. He feels more like a conspiracy theorist than an arch villain.

The story of how his first expedition got funded is also funny. It got funded because Isabella was annoyed with him and his nattering and she just wanted him to go away. Reasoning that he either succeeds or dies trying. Either way, she wins

The rest is history has a great podcast series on it. All their episodes on the Americas are great
 
MAGA says Amazon plane that crashed in Miami was because of DEI immigrants.

They cite the accent of the first officer. They say it’s just like the trucking companies hiring illegals. Substandard pilot that barely speaks English. The comments are just insane.

They ignore that the Captain and pilot in command was an old white guy military veteran that was ignoring the first officer.

Are they stupid or lying about this case? It was blatant pilot error caused either by cowboy attitude or company pressure to avoid the time and cost of a go-around. MAGA blames DEI immigrants.

It isn’t just this video either. They are flooding the comments of articles all over the place about the accident with similar slander. Stupid lying morons from the president to the YouTubers I guess.

It is all about the narrative. Doesn't have to be true, as long as it pushes the narrative. The super majority of voting Republicans think 2020 was stolen, despite not an 0 or 1 in evidence to support the claim. These people will believe whatever they are told. We are supremely fucked.

Another factor: 1973. The Arab nations were determined to wipe Israel from the map. Israel would have responded with the bomb. That could have turned into WWIII. While it would no longer be likely to start WWIII the basic problem remains--Israel's enemies do not understand nuclear diplomacy 101: always leave the other guy a way out. Let Israel fall and the Middle East goes up in mushroom clouds.

The basic problem is he thinks he can somehow win without actually winning. Victory while leaving them a functioning oil-exporting nation is not feasible.

Which is why I believe that the obvious solution is rarely even discussed. Prosecute illegal employers, the ones who are stealing jobs from legimate workers and giving them to undocumented folks.
The problem is that would hugely inconvenience the elite. Cut the undocumented work force and the rest will have much more bargaining power. It will also cut consumption because the undocumented will not be buying gas or food or anything else, causing a drop in prices.

That's why nobody seriously proposes the obvious solution. Because it will benefit society as a whole at the expense of the donor class.

Doesn't work.

An awful lot of them are using forged paperwork. And you don't want to deal with that until you have basically solved the problem of identity theft. Otherwise you'll move them from working under fictitious identities to working under stolen ones--which will be even more of a headache.

And when it's truly under the table.....my wife's favorite place get roast duck the owner got in a big pile of trouble because there was no withholding or worker's comp for his under-the-table employees. The existing laws work.

I don't think that is what will happen, broadly.

Big companies, owned by the donor class, will get slammed in the pocket book. They will then tell their minions in government to fix it. That will force the government to fix immigration laws. Resulting in a more viable and humane system.
