America Deserves to Watch Trump's Trial on TV, Live & In Real Time​

State courts began to let cameras in the courtroom during the late 20th century and today about two-thirds of the state courts in the country allow, typically on a case-by-case basis, some recording or livestreaming of court proceedings.

Federal courts, however, generally prohibit live cameras, a prohibition that extends from District courts all the way up to the Supreme Court.

The old objection to recording or carrying proceedings live was always that “lawyers will play to the cameras.” Thirty years of experience with state courts, though, have proven this wrong; there’s no discernable difference between courtroom behavior with or without cameras.

Another objection was that it might subject accused people to unnecessary notoriety by being televised, but mug shots and other evidentiary photos and video are routinely subject to release, either voluntarily or through legal proceedings invoking freedom of information concerns.

Cameras in federal courts have been an issue for years, with bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress; they just haven’t yet hit the threshold to make it through both bodies as final legislation.

IMO this is hugely important to the future of the United States of America. You KNOW that if it is not televised live, the foxwashed masses will never know one goddam thing about what Trump did, they will only hear about what a kangaroo court it was from their usual fiction generators. The first time I saw Trump's florid face -- sometime in 2012 -- he was telling his revolting lies about Birtherism on some public affairs show. After watching for two minutes, I knew beyond a doubt that there was no truth and no integrity in this man. His followers have seen every subsequent act and speech from DJT. These include the pussy remark, the Trump Foundation takedown, the Trump University takedown, his pronouncements on Charlottesville, his treasonous remarks at Helsinki, both impeachments, his "You've got to fight like hell" speech to the angry Jan. 6 mob, the Trump Corporation conviction on tax evasion, the sexual assault conviction in NYC, the bullshit defense in the documents arraignment.... A live feed from the documents trial would do nothing to peel away his core supporters. They'd stare at their TVs and say, "This should be Hillary! This should be Hunter!" Ashli Babbitt and her fellow criminals are heroes to these folks. We can only be thankful that his core support is around 35% of the country. They're still dangerous as hell, and they're not changing.

I tend to agree for the most part but I do think some of them would change their minds.

THey may choose not to cover it if they think it will look bad for Trump. They can use the excuse that they won’t cover a kangaroo court because of thei high journalistic integrity. Then they can simply report on it and spin to their hearts’ delights.

But who knows. If this ever gets to trial we will see.

I know this makes me a snobby arrogant cunt, but I can't help but think broadcasting the proceedings live on ESPN with commentators discussing play by play kinda cheapens the proceedings somewhat and even runs the risk of making people less informed due to the inevitable sensationalism. Not my country though, only my $0.02.

Sure, that's a thing heavily shown on right wing media. But not solely by right wing media. What possible constructive benefit can there be for live broadcasting of a criminal trial? Everyone would just jizz their pants over their particular tree of choice and not give a fuck about the forest.

It is unwise to underestimate the willful ignorance of Trump supporters. They really are astonishingly stubborn.

His poll numbers among the base went up when he was indicted in the hush money case. The one where he paid a porn star to keep quiet about their brief affair. The "family values" voters who lost their ever-loving minds about Bill Clinton cheating on his wife rallied in support of a man who cheated on all three of his wives, and the last one with a porn star.

His poll numbers among the base soared when he was indicted for - among other things - violations of the Espionage Act. The "America first" voters who lost their ever-loving minds about Chelsea Manning exposing government secrets closed ranks around a man who piled government secrets around his toilet and in some cases may have literally flushed some of them.

When he was put "on trial" in Congress, and one of the lead "prosecutors" (if you will) was the hard right daughter of Dick "I even shoot my friends in the face" Cheney, they sided with him and demanded she be thrown out of the party.

He literally can do no wrong in their eyes. He could come out and say "you know, I read The Communist Manifesto, and that Karl Marx has some really interesting ideas" and within a few nanoseconds they'd be sporting red "Make America Communist Again" hats.

Well they've seen the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol, and the bad bits. It was all bad bits. You'd have to be Amish not to have. And what happened? What minds were changed?
Why after four years of making a complete hash of the presidency, Donald Trump didn't do too bad in 2020? And I'll hedge my bets and say his being president again in 2024 will largely hinge on the rest of us getting up off our asses and getting out to vote.

It doesn't matter one iota if Fox News showed the Trump trial in its entirety. If they gave an accurate assessment of the trial.

Evidence does not matter when your future is uncertain. Reason goes by the wayside when you have yet to achieve security in your life.
Certainty and security are needed most and whoever can best convince these folks that is what they will bring will get their vote.

As he is being lead away to prison Trump shouts out to his gathered supporters, "The jury found me innocent of all charges, but Biden's goons are taking me to prison. Stop them. Free me." Violence then ensues, as his minions, many of them armed, attack the escorting officers.

I seriously doubt Trump will be sentenced the same day he's found guilty. And if trial does proceed all the way to the jury having to make a verdict, I suspect the courthouse in question will be better fortified than nuclear missile silo long before then.
