I wouldn't doubt it if most rape victims already have something "off" about them which is why they become victims in the first place and that wouldn't include just female rape victims, but also male rape victims. When assholes look for someone to victimize, they're going to take advantage of such circumstances and that would include people who have already been traumatized. [It's also going to include people who are by themselves, addicted to drugs, are children, dependents, etc]. Now that's different from 9/11 terrorist assholes airplane bombing tall buildings and the people within.

The fact that some rape victims are 'off' or in denial or behave in ways others find strange is the reason why law enforcement agencies have established procedures for investigating reported rapes - procedures that were not followed in Marie's case.
What I find remarkable in this thread is that readers can clearly see where and how the system failed, and yet some still wish to blame Marie for that failure.
The police officers who received Marie's report failed to follow established procedure, failed to fully investigate the reported crime, and coerced a false confession from her. Marie was vilified in the press and on public media as a woman who 'got caught making a false rape claim'. She was bullied and humiliated by the organization running the program at the apartment building where she lived. She was threatened with imprisonment. She was coerced into entering a guilty plea in court, and hit with a fine she could ill afford to pay. All of this was wrong, and none of it was her fault.
I realize that for some folks it's hard to admit that a woman who has been publicly denounced for making a false rape claim was telling the truth all along, that an unfounded rape claim can also be a truthful account of an actual event, and that sometimes cops screw up, but ffs this isn't rocket science.
The "moral of this story" is that cops should follow established procedures for handling rape reports and not rely on 'gut feelings' when dealing with the reported victims, especially when it's a known fact that people who have suffered trauma sometimes act strangely.

With alldue respect there is not a single poster here who Wpuld not be traumatized and give somewhat inconsistent accounts if a stranger broke into their home in the middle of the night and raped them. None of us would handle that calmly, rationally or consistently. We'd all ce emotionally over wrought, confused, frightened and traumatized.

It is true that mentally ill people are more frequently the victims of assaults and other crimes than those who enjoy better mental health. It is true that those who grow up in the foster system are more likely to suffer sexual assaults while in foster care. As had the victim in this case.

People act in all kinds of ways after a trauma occurs. That is normal and not at all "crazy". Police are not mental health experts and should not attempt to be. 1 out of 5 Americans have a diagnosable mental illness of some kind. The criminal justice system should serve everyone as the most foundational element of American law is that all are to be treated equal.
Police are not the final arbiters of truth. They should gather facts and evidence and present that to a Prosecutor or Grand Jury. We need more trials in criminal cases, and less ignorance about mental illness and the effects of trauma.
Feeling numb after trauma is normal. Being in denial is normal. Being extremely emotional is normal. Having a patchy memory of the events is normal.
Trauma fucks up people's brains. That's what trauma is. There is no "normal" or standard reaction. Deal with it.

That it is difficult to pinpoint what EXACTLY is "off" or "crazy" is precisely the point. Do you trust the story from a person? why or why not? can you explain EXACTLY why?
