Oh look, anti-LGBT violence seems to be increasing at about the same time evangelicalism is spreading. What an amazing coincidence. I would never have expected that. [/facetious]

The sad thing is, evangelicals honestly believe that what they are doing is moral, and that we are immoral for asking them to stop doing things that result in the murders of homosexuals. Is there anything we can say to convince them that it is bad to spread so much hate that people get killed? Anything at all? I'm at my wits' end here.

I just wish they would decide that morality is more important than their religious beliefs. :(

On a foundation of immensely crappy education levels.
A good indicator of how educated a population is, is literacy.

Brazil has made huge improvements towards reducing the levels of illiteracy in the country, decreasing the number of illiterates from 16.3 million in 2000 to 13.2 million in 2012. During 2013 the government saw this reduction stagnate.

That's too recent. So it's not a good sign.

One of the biggest issues that Brazil faces, mainly due to a poor public education system, is the fact that nearly 18% of the Brazilian population is functionally illiterate, meaning that they know words and numbers but are unable to comprehend a sentence or perform a simple mathematical operation. Perhaps what is most alarming is that according to research by the Instituto Paulo Montenegro (IPM), related to research company Ibope, 38% of Brazilian undergraduates are also functionally illiterate.

18% of the population is functionally illiterate and 38% of undergraduates are functionally illiterate... that seems odd.

In the U.S., Evangelicals reduced this sort of hate speech because societal opposition to it became common. i.e. They didn't stop believing it was true, they just became embarrassed as more and more people reacted to their views on homosexuals. Eventually most of these churches will probably modify their beliefs about gays to become more inline with the views of the general public.

Correlation doesn't have to imply causation.

When things are more insecure, like the economy, people tend to get:

1) More conservative
2) More religious.

They also become more violent, rob each other more, murder each other more as well as start abusing substances more. Are all those also linked to the rise in Evangelism?

I wonder if they're learning all that gay hatred from the Muslims?

Christianity predates Islam. The Muslims got it from them, who in turn got it from Jews.

So during times of economic troubles, people get angry and lash out at... only or mostly LGBT people?

Yup....and Jews, and whatever minority annoys the majority at the moment. People/men also lash out at women. Domestic violence rises dramatically. Is that also due to Evangelism?

Except that up until recently, Brazil was very open to LGBT.

So why are they now a hated minority? What changed to make them hate LGBT enough to target them with violence when economic troubles places stress on everybody?

Ehe, what? I'm going to need a source for that? I haven't been in Brazil specifically. But my experience of Latin America is pretty fucking far from being ok with any kind of deviancy.

They have the Mediterranean idea that there's a winner and loser to sex, and whoever gets penetrated, in whatever hole, is the loser. And is therefore weak and deserve pity, as well as protection. Also, "gay" is taking it in the ass. The man doing the fucking (in the tranny's ass) is straight as an arrow.

So they've view homosexuality differently than in Northern Europe, or USA. That doesn't make them any more liberal. That macho culture really is a damn nuisance.

Brazil has legalised same-sex marriage, and its major cities are considered "gay friendly".

I suspect that this not the case in other parts of Latin America, so your experience will not translate well.
