That was IIDB's short lived claim to fame. Oxidizing Material was the originator of that. Clever guy. I wonder what happened to him.

I just save images I like and use Gimp to add the caption. As for making money from a meme, I don't think that's a thing.

YOYOYO!
That, as a greeting amongst friends in an MMO was started by me. It evolved between three close friends that would start "YO", be responded with "YOYO", and then the third would say "YOYOYO".... Just "YOYOYO" became to mean "hello everyone (we're all here)". No one did that until my guild spread it around.. not that so many people use that.. and it isn't exactly a meme per say... ok, never mind... it sucks.

Generally, create something that makes others laugh and maybe think, either because they see it as totally encapsulating an image, person, or idea, or hilariously coming at an idea from a skewed perspective.
I attempted to make a meme with a webpage on elephanticity, which showed up in a couple of places, but the one that showed up in LOTS of places was 'Should Christians Play Chess?' which has been quoted and linked to in a buhgillion places on game and chess forums. http://elephanticity.250x.com/xianches.html
It was kinda surprising just how many people will take the time to refute it or call me names, or both.
