Apple and Amazon will suspend a social media platform described as a "free speech" Twitter clone from their App Store and web hosting service respectively, saying it has not taken adequate measures to prevent the spread of posts inciting violence.

The action against the social networking service, Parler, follows a similar move by Alphabet Inc's Google.

Parler is favoured by many supporters of US President Donald Trump, who was permanently suspended from Twitter on Friday, and it is seen as a haven for people expelled from Twitter.

Apple had earlier given Parler 24 hours to submit a detailed moderation plan, following complaints it was being used to "plan and facilitate yet further illegal and dangerous activities".

But in a statement Apple said: "Parler has not taken adequate measures to address the proliferation of these threats to people's safety."

It said it was removing the app "until they resolve these issues".

Parler CEO John Matze complained on his site of being scapegoated.

"Standards not applied to Twitter, Facebook or even Apple themselves apply to Parler," he said.
He said he "won't cave to politically motivated companies and those authoritarians who hate free speech".

Amazon's move effectively takes the site offline unless it can find a new company to host its services.

Amazon suspended Parler from its Amazon Web Services (AWS) unit, for violating terms of services by failing to effectively deal with a steady increase in violent content on the social networking service, BuzzFeed News reported.
...

Well, I have to admit, that all happened quicker than I expected.

Honestly, it's amazing how lazy the right-wingers are. I'm not surprised by how whiny they are, they have always been whiny.

But really, no one is preventing them from creating their own platform like twitter. You don't *have* to use AWS, you don't *have* to use the Android Google Play store, or the IPhone store. People have been warning about the issues of non-free software. But everyone is too lazy.

Jesus, *Mastedon already exists*, and these guys just bitch and whine.

MAGA, can you hear me? MAGA, can you see me?
MAGA, can you find me in the night?
MAGA, how I love you! MAGA, how I need you!
MAGA, how I miss you tweeting me goodnight.

At the start of 2020, Parler had less than 1M users. With all the press of tech censorship, the founder’s message that the site may be down for a few days, 13 hours ago, currently has 26M views.

Great. Glad those companies had a rare moment of finding some ethics. They have more of chance of losing $ with their decision than had they done nothing and hid behind a dishonest and illogical "free speech" argument (that doesn't apply b/c they are not the government). Despite most people supporting their decision, few would have left those platforms had they done nothing, but some of the Parler users are likely to boycott those products/platforms.

The only negative of this is that Parler is a virtual meeting place for hate-groups, criminals, terrorists and seditionists, and thus provides a useful resource for the FBI to track the most dangerous elements in US society.

Doesn't look like it is going to be that easy:

Didn't Amazon begin by selling books? I am wondering how soon they will start burning them too?

So you're fine with incitement and planning of violence.

And fine with forcing someone else to publish it.

If only the president of the US could do something like call a press conference or just make a report to the media for publication. Unfortunately now that his private sector dog whistle signaling media shut down his 'true' attempts at communication, no one knows where to hear his message anymore.

Based on their current trajectory? Never.

Aw. Ignorant conservotards are "concerned" about free speech. Apparently they don't realize that Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Apple (ironically known as the "MAGA companies") are private entities acting in the interest of their own self preservation by refusing to provide services to a platform that irresponsibly cultivates anti-democratic, violent authoritarianism.
Apparently these morons want to contradict themselves and have the goobermint force these companies to coddle their favorite shit-stirring platform.

So instead of condemning the actual fucking nazis that stormed the capitol, you condemn Amazon instead. I can't even measure the level of cognitive dissonance required for such a fucked up view of the world.
