And it still costs less per ounce than the bottled water sold at gas stations.

And let's not forget that $.48 average is state and federal excise taxes.

Well I don't know what the average price of tap water in the US is, but I pay $3.86 (AUD) for 264 US gallons; which includes piped delivery to my house, and taking away the used stuff via sewerage and treating and disposal of it.

That's less than 1.2 US cents per US gallon, at today's exchange rate.

And I live on the driest continent on Earth.

Yes, we use too much gas, and we buy it in bulk, and the profit margin on it is razor thin. If it were a regularly packaged liquid product you could expect to spend $10-12 gal I would gather.

Are the costs of the containers and associated shipping costs factored in to these prices? For example, I don't doubt that printer ink is overpriced, but there is also a little tank and (usually) a mini-circuit board that goes with it. Along with the sealed plastic tub it comes in and cardboard packaging. Also, imagine how big a truck you would need to transport the equivalent of 1000 gallons of pre-packaged printer ink cross country versus 1000 gallons of gasoline that is transported in a basic gas truck.
