Bloody brilliant joke....and now some people are saying it's now worth even more...

Banksy, the most elusive figure in the art world, gave a giant middle finger to art brokers on Friday night when his painting fetched a record price at Sotheby’s only to self-destruct seconds later.

Witnesses said an alarm sounded immediately after Girl With Balloon sold for approximately $1.4 million, leaving onlookers gasping and confused as the painting then began to slip out of the bottom of the frame in shredded pieces. The frame, which had come with the painting, had apparently been booby-trapped with a hidden device.

Attendees at the auction were captured in video of the incident laughing hysterically once they’d realized what had happened.

“It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” Alex Branczik, Sotheby's senior director and head of contemporary art, said of the stunt.

Laughed my ass off when I read that :hysterical: And yes, I suspect it will be worth even more now.

I have a small canvas of the Girl With Balloon. I bought it from a street vendor in Brooklyn. I read later that Banksy had someone set up a stall in NY to sell his prints. I've wondered ever since if the one I have is real or not. :p

Should have used a cross-cut shredder...

I think he just made it even more valuable.

They're estimating it's added about 50% to the value.

Ya, poor Banksy.

It looks to me like he was trying to make some kind of statement about the art market being overpriced and irrelevant or something like that, but nobody listened and his attempts at undercutting the value of the painting just ended up giving it more value.

It's like in the Life of Brian where he's going on about how everyone is an individual who doesn't need to follow anyone and they all yell out en masse "Yes. We're all individuals" and then shush the person who disagrees with them.

Geez. Maybe Banksy can find a way of telling these people they’re all just full of shit.

We have people that have enough money to spend millions on a bit of canvas with some paint on it or a vintage Ferrari they will never drive but heaven knows we can't tax them a little more.

I suspect he knew full well this would be the outcome. He made his statement without actually harming anyone, which is how most of his pranks work. In fact, he made his statement on two levels - the absurdity of the auctioned price, and the double-absurdity of it going up in value after being shredded.
