Bartlesville Man Accidentally Burns Home Down After Lighting Nike Shoes On Fire In Protest Of Nike’s Colin Kaepernick Ad

Burning perfectly good shoes is a bad idea. I doubt that they'll lose that many sales over time, relative to their normal sales performance, over this. I think that the majority of people that would consider Nike probably don't care one way or the other.

Yes. Most people that don't care about politics in sports, don't insert politics into sports.

I wonder how many pairs of Nikes were sold last night after the Kapernick ad ran during the Falcons/Eagles game... it was tempting to wait up for that ad, then jump online and order some... but I couldn't stay awake that long.

I am sure their marketing department are shitting their collective pants.
They are certainly taking a gamble.
Unless, of course, they understand that yours is a very small minority view,
If it was, Kaep would have had no trouble finding a gig in the NFL.

and that the old adage 'There's no such thing as bad publicity' has just saved them literally millions of dollars by getting people to distribute awareness of their brand on social media free, gratis, and for nothing.

Nike doesn't need brand awareness. Pretty much anybody with feet has heard of them. Their objective is to convince more people to but a Nike sneaker than they are alienating away from buying Nike sneakers.

Nike is gambling. My guess is that younger and hipper consumers may be attracted. And once attracted, maybe they will continue to buy Nike products. And my guess is that less younger and more "nativist" types will be turned off, but they are probably older and are less likely to have bought as many Nike products over their shorter expected life span.

Personally, I will look more favorably at Nike's the next time I need to buy athletic shoes. Not just to reward Nike, but to give a metaphorical poke in the eye in the deplorables, the bigots, and their dupes.

And I'd be a bit more in agreement that Nike was taking a chance in this ad campaign if Kaepernick had actually done something that was morally wrong. You know, something akin to situations with OJ Simpson or Ray Rice or Aaron Hernandez.

If Nike had to walk on eggshells fearing just how much people on the far right-wing would crap their pants, they'd never get any work done.

Actually you'd be doing Nike a great favor if you didn't buy their shoes.
Because their business model is predicated on people not buying their product?

They are targeting younger and hipper who are willing to spend a premium on shoes.

While I am sure their fugly overpriced NBA-player branded shoes have a much higher profit margin, Nike also has reasonably priced sneakers.
Also, it's only idiots who pay $300 for a pair of sneakers, or as you put it "are willing to spend a premium on [athletic] shoes".

They want to be the cool brand.
And nothing says "cool" like a guy who robs a convenience store for a few cigarillos and gets shot dead when he attacks a cop.

They'd prefer that you go back to those Walmart Velcro shoes.

You have no idea what I wear.

more "nativist" types
Wrong far-left political issue. They did not hire Jose Zarate as spokesman, but Colin Kaep. His issue is police killing black criminals who attack them, not giving illegal aliens immunity from deportation.

Personally, I will look more favorably at Nike's the next time I need to buy athletic shoes.
Aren't you old yourself? Oh, I guess you reckon yourself "hip" because you shout "fuck the police" and the like ...

Not just to reward Nike, but to give a metaphorical poke in the eye in the deplorables, the bigots, and their dupes.
I think people who go around rioting, looting and setting shit on fire just because a person who shares their skin pigmentation got himself shot by police are the true deplorables and bigots. Not to mention being duped by #BLM leaders.

He is not a murderer for sure, but he is a supporter of the likes of Mike Brown.

So fuck trumpo and his racist supporters.

Being against a multimillionaire who is against police and in favor of thugs is not being "racist".

Hell, Kaep is half-white himself. He is still an idiot who got one concussion too many playing handegg.

I am old. I would never consider myself hip. And I never shout "fuck the police" and the like.

No one rioted when Tamir Rice was murdered or Philandro Castile. Lumping peaceful and reasonable protesters with rioters just because the victims share skin pigmentation is deplorable and bigoted.

To *some* people, a black person simply looking at them is an act of unforgiveable violence, while a white person brandishing a gun and shouting MAGA slogans is just normal free expression. You might be addressing such a person here...

What is the demographic that is most likely to buy Nike? Probably what matters to the discussion.

Doesn't matter one bit in the long term or for the big picture. You're a conservative, I'm a progressive. We're BOTH typing the word Nike, and hopefully spelling it correctly. That is ALL that matters.

It matters for expected sales. And I don’t buy Nike. The shoes are usually overpriced.

Their international sales are huge. But to answer your question: their target customers are younger people, liberal, uraban with disposable income.

I think that you deserve credit for admitting that Kap is protecting police violence. He isn't protesting the military. You're light years more honest that Fox News or Trump.
