Praying for God to soften the hearts of atheist friends is the most important thing Christian can do for non-believers, says famed evangelist the Rev. Billy Graham, who also encourages believers to be a "witness to Jesus' peace and joy."

In a question-and-answer column published Monday on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association website, Graham was asked what Christians can do to encourage their atheist friends to seek salvation in Jesus Christ.

"My best friend and I enjoy each other's company, but I'm a Christian and he says he's an atheist. I've tried to argue with him, but he just laughs and says I ought to grow up and forget about God. How can I win him over?" the person asked.

Buy them a book by Billy. My suggestion is his bestseller Pixies, about the existence of pixies, and how with improved spiritual eyes we can sense the pixies around us and see that they stand ready to defend us in the faith.
Excuse me that book is entitled Angels.

Softening the brain is what it’d take. And obviously, judging from “the witness” of believers.

Wow "Practice what you Preach?" is on the list. If more christians did that, I might still be one.

Dear Billy Graham,

I wrote to you a while ago about my friend the atheist. You told me to pray that his heart be softened. I did so. I prayed and prayed. I asked my relatives, my church and my Christian school to pray. We did this for months, and then it happened! Last night, he came to me hugged me tight and said "Be you blessed, for I have found Allah, and Mohammed (pbuh) is his prophet!"

Now what genius?

Signed, a douchebag friend that can't accept people for who they are.

If this is true, then we can get Christians to believe in fairies by being nice to them. Producing valid evidence for fairies is not necessary.

I think the message here is that if you look happy and convincingly claim that it is your relationship with fairies that makes you happy you will win over some afariests.

Of course, that would imply that successful, happy gay people with a good self image can win over more gays...

I think someone should send that letter to him just to see what response it would get

"Praying for God to soften the hearts of atheist friends ..."

... is going the wrong way about it. It shows Billy is not up to speed with his Bible, where God is more interested in hardening hearts than softening them. Just ask Moses' Pharaoh.

I was surprised to learn that Graham is 97 and has had Parkinson since 1992.

He's a tough old hide.

That's a bit paradoxical.

Atheist say...why that's very unChristian of you Lion IRC.
And I ask the atheist, isnt that what you want?

Um, no. Not if they're going to claim to be Christains.

IF they're going to act unChristain AND abandon their superstition, that'd be cool.
But if they're going to pick and choose, being Christainy some of the time, and telling us they're morally superior, and then abandoning their morality when it's convenient to them, that's just cheating.

It's almost as if being 'a Christain' is just a pose they adopt for reasons other than faith, innit?

Many people do not think beyond labels, but especially religious people.

There's nothing Paradoxical about it at all, Lion. I left the church not because of science or anything like that, but mostly because virtually every christian I ever met was a hypocrite. You see, I was still a christian when I realized that.

The factors that made me leave the church:
1. The realization that the church practices mind control.
2. Disgust with my fellow Christians.
3. The actual unbelievability of the Bible.

The actual atheism came later.

You see, I don't agree with what you preach, but I'd have a lot more respect for Christians if they actually behaved as if they believed what they said. Is that so hard to understand? Or is the concept of respecting someone you disagree with so foreign to you?

One experience I had in my church was when my father was on the search committee for a new minister. I don't know why they bothered, as it seemed to be the Bishop's call anyhow. But anyway, at one point the congregation was allowed to give anonymous notes to say what sort of things they wanted in a minister. Overwhelmingly, there were a bunch that said, in various different ways, 'heterosexual.' And of course, more than one that said, bluntly, 'Caucasian.' It was an eye opening experience for me.

When your kids go to college you apply for financial aid. All the "Christian" parents were discussing how to cheat the system, how you hide your net worth and move your money to somewhere where they can't find it. Nice example.

But by then I had realized that Christian is just a label that meant shit so I wasn't terribly surprised by their behavior. In fact I'd come to expect it. I didn't even consider it hypocritical anymore, it was something I'd come to expect. Dial up the religiosity and dial up the hypocrisy.
