Guardians? Tom Hanks (interned-ish at the Great Lakes Theater for a few years very early in his career.... he has apparently done well for himself, mainly as a cross-dresser) announced in a video the new identity of the Cleveland Baseball team.

article said:
The name Guardians is a reference to well-known art deco statues located on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, which spans the Cuyahoga River and connects downtown Cleveland to the city’s trendy Ohio City neighborhood. Those statues are known as the “Guardians of Traffic.”
I'm not the gatekeeper to all knowledge, but I do know a few things, and I had no idea there were statues at all, forget guardians of the traffic. That almost sounds like a prank.

So now the Cleveland franchise will no longer need to worry about controversy over the Indians name, but instead will wonder... Guardians... really?

I don't mind it. It's hard to swallow a name change in a sport with so much history, but after a couple years it'll settle in. It sounds like they went with something with a bit of character, not *too* modern, and that payed homage to the Indians name.

Trade-offs, there might not have been something better. And on the bright side they're no longer called the Indians, some will grit their teeth but this is a positive thing.

Ted Cruz spoke out against the change. What's your real name again, Ted?

They need a name that immediately brings to mind what the local area is known for . Something that when you say it, people think "Cleveland."

You know...like the Utah Jazz.

Did no one stop to think about poor Brittiany Spears....she will be insulted.

Good one. :D I'm sure the SJWs will comb through all of recorded history related to the word "Guardian" and those statues to find something to be upset about, and demand another name change. They will never be satisfied.

Shoulda been the Cleveland Rocks so they could sing the song at games and go nuts or whatever, but I approve of the name change nonetheless.

People complaining that "Guardians" is stupid baffle me, as "Cleveland Indians" was also stupid, as indeed are most sports team names.

I looked at NFL team names, and was surprised that about half of them make some degree of sense.

I hope Cleveland uses a raccoon as their logo.

Detroit needs to change the name of the Redwings to the Bears. Then we would have Lions and Tigers and Bears.

Oh my!

Well, if they're looking for life forms native to Cleveland, the Cuyahoga River has gizzard shad and hog suckers, either of which sounds like a team to me, especially the hog suckers. (Fans: "We suck! We suck! We suck! USA!!!") And mud puppies sounds kinda cute. On land and in the sky, there's the Public Square pigeon, which spends all day strutting, cooing, and pooping. That strut -- sort of a Foghorn Leghorn hitching movement -- would look so cool if the pitcher did it in his windup.
But nobody listens to me.

I thought whatever they picked, I'd hate and I'd just call them the Tribe regardless. Kinda like I never got use to Progressive Field. It's still The Jake. But the Guardians is okay. I always liked The Guardians of Traffic on the Hope Memorial Bridge. Cool Art Deco styling. I do wonder why they didn't opt for an Art Deco style for the new name, instead of that Fred Flintstone font. They should get rid of that ridiculous mascot, Slider. Replace it with a falcon. There are Peregrine Falcon nests on the bridge and on the Terminal Tower. They'll figure it out eventually. I have to slow walk these people. At least they're finally developing the lakefront and making plenty of bike trails like I've been telling them for the past fifteen years.
