coups and dictatorships

Hi Everyone,

We are a rather diverse lot here at IIDB and make a good resource for finding out information.

Have any of you here lived through a coup attempt or under a dictatorship? What was it like? What are dos and donts?

Here in the states we have had no experience with this within living memory. When Texas was a republic it had a coup attempt that was put down and the Confederacy had the home guard but that was so long ago.

Ive come to the conclusion that there are lots of people who want to see this country have a coup or dictatorship and all this media coverage about Trump wanting to overthrow the government is not about Trump so much per see as seeding the public, or many in the public, with the idea and be okay with it. Then when enough people back the idea or at least don't care these people doing the deeding now will try it.

A bunch of people violently storming government buildings, with the intent to remove, or prevent the installation of, the lawful leadership of the nation, is a coup attempt.

Those guys were peaceful tourists who just wanted to hang a portrait of Mike Pence on the wall.

Or they were antifa instigators who work for the CIA and were let inside by Capitol police.

We will never know the truth. Could be anything…

Bilby, I accept your rebuke. But I just proved how out of the norm psychologically it is to think of one happening here .

I'm pretty sure if it succeeds it will be from the right. There is no true left in the US. We have a communist party with 5 members and a socialist party with 10.

I'm certain it will be allied with racists and the religious.

I'm no expert but I know Hitler didn't come to power because he gave good speeches. He had a lot of wheeling and dealing in backrooms with Uber rich and aristocratic people. I have a friend in Nigeria I've been talking too. They had a coup in 1966 and the same clique has been running the country ever since and the presidents who win elections are in this clique. I've read a lot of people with high levels of the beauracracy here in the US actually come from the elite families. They generally stay out of the limelight but hold these positions to make sure the country steers things their way. If this is true I'm trying to figure out why they would possible want a violent seizure if power anyway. Unless they want to just stop the facade and go ahead and be totally free to embezzle everything.

While I have never lived under a dictatorship I have relatives who have. I have noticed an automatic cutting-off of any topic of conversation that looks like it could be unfavorable to the government. This despite being in a private dwelling (not a hotel room that very well might contain bugs) and only family members present.

I also note the general belief that there is no recourse for injustice from above.

Here is the thing I find weird. Not that it is false just-----seemingly uncommon sense. I read IBM and the Holocaust by David Black several years ago. One thing that stood out to me is that even though Germany was under NAZI dictatorship the book mentioned the company took the NAZI government to court over a dispute and the court ruled in favor of the corporation. I thought that didn't happen in dictatorships. I didn't bring this up to dispute what you said its just a dictatorship is a strange world indeed.

I thought that didn't happen in dictatorships. I didn't bring this up to dispute what you said its just a dictatorship is a strange world indeed.

Dictatorships aren't all identical. The Nazis were more about the rule of law even though the people didn't have a voice in making that law.

I lived in two Communist countries for a few months: Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. They seemed rather "normal".

I brought back some books from the SU, including "History of the USSR". That book mentioned only one Soviet leader, Vladimir Lenin, and not Joseph Stalin or Nikita Khrushchev or Leonid Brezhnev. It stated about development projects that the Communist party commanded this and that and the other thing. Development projects in the 1930's, when Joseph Stalin would be given credit and praised as a great leader and a great hero and a great inspiration.
