Covid-19 miscellany

Absolutely shocking !

Two organisers of a mass snowball fight that saw hundreds of students gather in a park have been fined £10,000 each for breaching England's lockdown rules. Crowds gathered in Hyde Park, Leeds for more than two hours following heavy snow on January 14, despite Covid-19 guidance asking Britons to stay at home in a bid to control the virus.

DailyMail

I thought the kids were not going to know what snow is !

Leeds is 300km north of London, and Hyde Park is at the top of a ridge, 100m above the Aire valley.

I know this very well, because I grew up in a house 100m from that park.

We got snow there when there was none even in the city of Leeds.

Your cherry-picking is irrational and counterproductive - assuming you care more about being factually correct than you do about scoring stupid political points amongst an audience that you hope is even less well informed than you are.

California schools will not be opening any time soon as teachers refuse to go return to work;

A frustrated Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday said school administrators and teachers unions should agree as soon as possible to reopen schools for younger students — or else be clear with families that they will not return to classrooms at all this academic year. Newsom was responding to growing demands that all teachers receive vaccines first, but also a long list of conditions that go beyond what the governor has proposed as safe to reopen schools that have been shut for nearly a year. The vast majority of California's 6 million public schoolchildren haven't been on campuses since March. On Wednesday, the California Teachers Association sent a letter to Newsom calling for teachers to be vaccinated before they return to K-12 campuses. Newsom has prioritized teachers in his vaccination plan, but it's hard to predict when more than 300,000 K-12 educators can actually receive the shot as the state grapples with widespread supply and distribution problems.

Politico

The teachers in California are deplorable. The recall Newsom noose tightens around this lame duck governor's neck.

What exactly is deplorable about wanting to be vaccinated before returning to spend 2 hours at a time in an enclosed space with 32 students?
It is not possible to keep space between teachers and students or between students in a classroom. I assure you that I and all. Of the teachers I work with would much rather be back in our classrooms with our students.

What exactly is deplorable about wanting to be vaccinated before returning to spend 2 hours at a time in an enclosed space with 32 students?

Because the "science and data" that Newsom has been banging on about says it's safe to go back in to the classroom and the teachers refuse to do their job.

Yet where schools reopen we see outbreaks. Can’t seem to post the link on iPad but a google search of Covid outbreaks in schools shows:
30 Colorado schools had outbreaks since January
10 new school out breaks in NJ
Covid outbreaks triple in Michigan k-12 schools
32 cases linked to 3 schools in VA.
Yet teachers are deplorable for wanting vaccines before returning to spending all day in enclosed spaces with large groups in close proximity.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers on Tuesday said that there is "reassuring" evidence about a lack of widespread coronavirus transmission in schools, amid sometimes-intense debate over reopening. The researchers wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association that there have been some reported cases of the virus in schools, but they have not been major drivers of transmission.

the Hill

If the people working in supermarkets can do their "essential" jobs, the teachers can do theirs. Stop making excuses.

Have you seen the new CDC study? Can you reconcile its conclusions with your comments?

Most of the data saying things are "safe" is crap from the right.

CDC reporting is mostly crap from the Republicans.

Was this Trump's CDC?

Well that's some rock solid logic. I guess I can discount that study now.

Basically all the pro-opening "research" has been crap.

Anyway, another nail in the coffin to the notion it's a nothing to most people:

Half of those with mild cases still have symptoms 6 months later. Mild case doesn't mean it didn't do lasting damage.

Can you specify the crao in the CDC study of schools? Or should I just assume it is crap because it is CDC?

Last month, a coronavirus-crisis sub-committee within the US House of Representatives released a report documenting 47 instances in which government scientists had been sidelined or their recommendations altered. And the report notes that the frequency of meddling has been increasing in the lead-up to the US election.

“It’s hard to express how unbelievably demoralizing this experience has been,” says Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research, a non-profit organization in Washington DC.

If Trump wins a second term, researchers fear what that could mean for public health and the scientific enterprise. If Democratic challenger and former vice-president Joe Biden wins, he’ll have his work cut out for him to restore the reputation of the US science agencies that Trump has damaged.

The politicization of the pandemic has even driven some career government scientists out altogether. NIH scientist Rick Bright resigned from his position last month, citing a lack of meaningful duties and frustration over the Trump administration’s disregard for scientific expertise. In April, Bright was removed from his post as the director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, which strategically awards financial support to drugs and treatments to help to fight disease outbreaks. In an official whistle-blower complaint, he alleged that his removal was retaliation for criticism of the administration’s COVID-19 response.

In August, now-removed guidance appeared on the CDC’s website that stated that asymptomatic people no longer needed to be tested for the virus, counter to the recommendations of public-health experts. A senior CDC official told CNN that this guidance was issued “from the top down”; it was eventually reversed after public outcry. Officials outside the CDC have allegedly inserted their own documents on the CDC website in a move that Samuel Groseclose, a retired epidemiologist who spent 27 years at the agency, calls “bizarre”.

To many public-health experts, it is clear that the Trump administration’s persistent meddling is responsible for the disastrous way in which the pandemic has unfolded in the United States. “Some of it is probably real and some of it is probably supposition,” Georges Benjamin, the executive director of the American Public Health Association in Washington DC, says of the media reports about interference. “But at the end of the day, this has been one of the worst risk-communications processes that I’ve ever seen. And I think that’s tragic.”

Trump stated many times that he wanted schools open. That the administration has corrupted the CDC shouldn't be questioned by anyone paying attention.

Trump administration and USAID donated ventilators for the coronavirus but now no one knows where they are, watchdog finds - The Washington Post
The Trump administration spent $200 million to send more than 8,700 ventilators to countries around the world last year, with no clear criteria for determining who should get them and no way to keep track of where many ended up, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office.

The effort, driven by the Trump White House, was an unusual top-down initiative with little decision-making by experts at the U.S. Agency for International Development, which carried out the administration’s orders. President Donald Trump last year boasted about U.S. success in manufacturing the machines and declared the U.S. “the king of ventilators,” promising donations to foreign countries.

...
ProPublica reported last year that the ventilator donation effort was marked by dysfunction and little clarity on how countries were chosen for the donations. The GAO’s findings largely confirmed that report and provided new details, finding that USAID ultimately spent $200 million to send 8,722 ventilators to 43 countries.
Trump Is Donating Ventilators to Countries That Don’t Need or Can’t Use Them — ProPublica
Nearly 8,000 ventilators are destined for foreign countries as part of Trump’s plan to make the U.S. “king of ventilators.” But public health experts worry the machines are crowding out more urgently needed aid.

As President Donald Trump came under criticism that his administration had failed to manage the coronavirus pandemic, he cited one area of success: his plan to donate thousands of ventilators to other countries.

“Now we’re the king of ventilators,” Trump told reporters on April 18.
Urk. I have no objection to exporting ventilators, but exporting them when there weren't very many at home is another story entirely.

The number of cases in the US were roughly 1/10 to 1/100 of what they are now... and we shut things down. Many in America was pissed off, and about a couple months ago, America kind of gave up about giving a damn. Probably why 75,000 or so people died in a month of Covid-19, and why half a million, minimum will have died of this.

In Ohio, they are prioritizing teachers and school staff over people in their 60s. Because... ???

Ohio wants to have full in school by March 1st, about 2/3 is hybrid or in-school right now. Akron needs 3000 people to get vaccinated, they have enough for 1/4 of that.

Antivaxxers block others from receiving COVID vaccine!

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/01/30/anti-vaccine-protest-dodger-stadium/

One of the largest vaccination sites in the country briefly shut down Saturday afternoon because maskless, anti-vaccine protesters blocked the entrance, officials said.
For nearly an hour, thousands of motorists in line to get a coronavirus vaccine shot at Dodger Stadium were stalled as about 50 people demonstrating against immunization efforts caused officials to temporarily close the site’s gates, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman David Ortiz told The Washington Post. The protest had no impact on the number of shots given Saturday at the site, which can vaccinate 8,000 people a day, Ortiz said.

These idiots were calling COVID a scam! WTF is wrong with people! Nobody is making them take the vaccine. Why are they interfering with those who want the vaccine? They organized this online and told those who protested to leave their MAGA hats etc. at home.
