If you actually elect Sanders as your president, I think it could go a long way towards salvaging the image of the United States of America. As a Canadian, I would for the first time in my life actually envy you for your political situation.
Really, only if the people get up off their ass and support him. If they elect Bernie and keep imprinting their ass on the couch, Bernie will be in much the same situation that Obama is in now.
The hilarious part is going to be the far right reaction to a Bernie presidency. I am in the habit of sadistically listening & reading the far right to monitor their activities. I do this not because I enjoy punishment, but because it is really the driving force behind the Republican party. Trump is the monster they created which will not die. He is the result of all the racism, hate, and xenophobia crystallized into human form. Anyway, the shit they spew about Obama is incredible. These people truly, actually believe that he is a Muslim Kenyan, letting in immigrants to become his brown shirts in order to enforce a new world order. They actually believe that he wakes up for the day with one mission: to destroy the United States of America. The thing is Obama is SO right moderate of center. Bernie will make their fucking heads explode! But he's WHITE! They will hate him of course, but they won't know what to do. Personally, I think what we'll see is a shift from the more gutter trash racist ideology to redneck gotta keep my guns cuz the Government is Nazi's type of ideology. Things will simply be more purely politically motivated instead of racially so. There will be exceptions as Sanders enacts his relief measures that Black Lives Matter supports, and makes changes to our justice system.
In closing, and I hate to say this, but I think it's true. If Sanders gets at least some of what he wants with regards to prison privatization, drug laws, law enforcement reform, and so on, he will have done more for people of color than Obama. Please don't misunderstand me. Obama has done a lot of good, and symbolically, to see him as president has made me proud. It's a good milestone for the U.S. Yet, I can't help but feel that Obama shouldn't have been afraid to push back against institutional racism much harder than he has. I know this congress does nothing but block everything the administration is trying to do. Yet, we should have seen more from him in this area. Perhaps he even has good reasons for his inaction, but if that's the case I'd like to know what it is. Appointing the justice department to Internal Affairs investigations after another unarmed black man is shot isn't doing much to help the cause. Perhaps i'm missing something important, but really, that's all I see him doing.
