Or the world's greatest ever interceptor - the English Electric Lightning, which was basically just two massive Rolls Royce Avon jets strapped together, with a stubby notched delta wing, and a cockpit. Fastest climb rate of any aircraft of it's time - Zero to 36,000ft in three minutes, 0.78 thrust/weight ratio, 31,000lbf of thrust on afterburner. (Please do not ask about effective combat range - it was intended for airfield protection, so it had enough fuel to get up, shoot down the enemy, and get home - leaving the MiG pilots swinging from their parachutes and thinking 'WTF was THAT?').

a P-35 lightning would probably do OK.

So, the P-35 heads towards the enemy and gets shot down. Those AMRAAMs are nothing but dead weight, if you did manage to launch one it will just self destruct as it won't have a target designation.

That's why you need a real Lightning. The  English Electric Lightning could fly circles around the P-38.

Wow! Just mention the waste of over a trillion dollars by the military and everybody pulls out the nostalgic memories with dreams of incinerating the enemy with good old tried and true megaweapons of the past. What a jackass approach. We need less weapons of mass destruction. We are wasting ourselves and our social organization on this shit. A trillion dollars....would build a dandy smart grid. Actually the military costs incurred and not needed over the last century would rebuild our entire infrastructure and perhaps a few infrastructures for others with change left so we could all go to a good war movie.

You misunderstand--I'm saying that the missiles won't do you any good because you can't designate a target for them. The AMRAAM can somewhat self-guide but it requires a target designation from the launching aircraft.

Insane to spend hundreds of billions to defend a nation that is falling a part.The enemy is us.Rebuilding the infrastructure would create far more jobs than more high tech weapons.

Civil engineers build targets and military engineers blow them up. A joke that did the rounds of the Australian Military during the 1st Gulf war, though probably much older than that.
