The Kurosawa version wasn't bad. The Polanski one was good, but very bloodthirsty. It was the first film he made after Sharon Tate was killed.

The 79 version was probably good, Ian McKellen and Judi Dench don't stuff up much. Any of the ones from the RSC are likely to be OK.

The 2006 one tried too hard IMO.
