The following is by Alfred Dedreux: White Horse with Two Dogs:

Concerning a famous painting showing a horse in such a 'flying' position, which I can't locate, there was a to-do among critics, one of whom claimed that, despite the unrealistic position of the horse, it was still a great picture, since the 'flying' position showed movement and speed more dramatically than more realistic paintings.

Re-reading this thread, this painting reminded me of this one:

"Horse Frightened by a Lion" by George Tate

I like the color contrast between the dark lion and the well-lit horse. Plus the sudden immediacy, the fear of the surprised horse. Those eyes...
 
Damn, I forgot all about my favorite portrait, Beatrice Cenci, attributed to Reni or Sirani. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful face (and saddest - she was about to be executed for killing her evil rapist father) ever painted (at least from what I've seen):
