FBI raids Cohen's office, seizes Stormy Daniels documents

 
 
 
Fake news. There were no documents and the FBI is an organization from television and not from real life.
 
Unless the documents can show that Cohen had hired the goon who threatened her, I don't see what the documents can show that would be legally problematic. At best, it shows Trump told Cohen to pay her off. But is that a crime?

Yes. If he did it to keep her quiet in the run up to the election, it's a campaign finance violation. If Cohen was repaid from campaign funds and they didn't report it, that's another crime. If it shows that Trump was unaware of the payment and didn't authorize it, that's a disbarrable offense by Cohen to claim to Daniels that he was representing Trump and can be used as leverage against him to flip on anything else he knows about Trump.

Just heard a few minutes of Sean Insanity on th' radio, This has poor ol' Sean mighty butthurt. I strongly suspect that this is not a fishing expedition by Mueller. I suspect there are very good reasons for this and very specific goals and reasons. But the right will demonize him none the less. I am sure tonight, Mark Levin will be squalling and howling on Faux about this.
 
Watching MSNBC, Rachel Maddow. It may not be all about Stormy Daniels. Cohen has been involved in a lot of stuff, including Russian Felix Sater, and has been investigated for bank fraud, campaign finance violations and more. There are long involved procedures when involving seizure of records that may involve lawyer - client privileges. This is only done after requests and subpoenas may not be been complied with properly. And any records seized will be scanned by a separate team that will prevent abuses of any lawyer - client privilege. But this will still be squealed and barked at by the right wing press. It is obvious that this was not done without a lot of planning and thought, and with good reason.

Iffy was caught doing something illegal, not so much. A judge had to sign off on this, and judges are most often former attorneys and thus very aware of the ramifications of raiding a lawyer's office. This tells me that the FBI went to the judge, showed them what they had already, and the judge said "wow...okay...approved."

Rosenstein -  President Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Rosenstein to serve as Deputy Attorney General for the United States Department of Justice on January 31, 2017. Rosenstein was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 25, 2017. In May 2017, he authored a memo which President Trump said was the basis of his decision to dismiss FBI Director James Comey.

Berman:
Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday named Geoffrey Berman to succeed Preet Bharara as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York on an interim basis, 10 months after Trump fired Bharara in a purge of all federal prosecutors. The U.S. attorney in Manhattan is crucial because the district is home to Trump Tower, where a meeting between Trump campaign officials and Kremlin-linked Russians occurred in 2016.

This is not a couple of rogue AUSAs sneaking in a warrant...

Federal magistrate judges (appointed by local district judges, not by the President) review search warrant applications. A Magistrate Judge therefore reviewed this application and found probable cause — that is, probable cause to believe that the subject premises (Cohen's office) contains specified evidence of a specified federal crime.

As reported last night on MSNBC, Cohen has been a fixer for Trump, not a lawyer. He has not represented Trump in any lawsuit or any other known legal dealings. Which may very well put his legal standing in a purported lawyer - client relationship into jeopardy. This is getting stranger by the minute.
