I have to say Gretchen Carlson has played this thing masterfully. She let everyone put their story on the record before revealing she had recorded meetings with Ailes.

The really sad thing about this farce is that Ailes was outed before his lifeless body was quietly hustled down the freight elevator of a Marriott, while this weeks "you got potential and I can help your career" is explaining to a Fox lawyer that he came out of the bathroom looking pale and then quit breathing.

And by merging news, politics, and entertainment in such an overt way, Ailes was able to personally shape the national conversation and political fortunes as no one ever had before. It is not a stretch to argue that Ailes is largely responsible for, among other things, the selling of the Iraq War, the Swift-boating of John Kerry, the rise of the tea party, the sticking power of a host of Clinton scandals, and the purported illegitimacy of Barack Obama’s presidency.

That is what upsets me most. I'm tempted to forward the article to a couple relatives with the caption "This is who you've let establish your world view," but it would be pointless.

Hmm...so Ailes is going to sue New York Magazine. He just isn't sure about what:

Well, my respect for women of Fox just went up from 0 to 0.4 or so.

If only they'd apply that toughness and spirit to examining their ideology. It's one thing to expose the stunted behavior of a handful of men, but another to acknowledge the worldview that cultivates it.

Is $20 Million enough?

Any chance of Ailes suing anyone pretty much evaporated with Fox News agreeing to settle with Carlson for twenty million. Carlson agrees to not pursue action against all the Fox employees who aided and abetted Ailes in his years as career councilor to nubile news readers.

This settlement clears Fox News and the Murdochs of any further obligations to Carlson. Carlson's employment contract bound her to take any disputes with Fox to binding arbitration, but the original lawsuit was a personal action against Ailes.

It would seem this also settles matters between Ailes and Carlson and maybe it does. What it certainly does is torpedo any attempt by Ailes to claim he has been defamed or libeled. At this point in time, the only people who are glad they met Ailes are his attorneys. They are racking up billable hours and he can afford it. There will be a lot of meetings and phone calls, but no lawyer from an accredited school would take this case into a court room.
