Right behind you so ... BOO!
Basic Beliefs
non-theist, anarcho-socialist
A group of 100 conservative lawyers and academics recently filed a Supreme Court brief arguing that gay marriage will cause 900,000 abortions over the next 30 years. Leading the charge is lawyer and former Antonin Scalia law clerk Gene Schaerr, who summarized the argument in a recent piece for the Heritage Foundation.

It goes something like this: same-sex marriage "undermines" traditional marriage, which leads to lower marriage rates. And lower marriage rates mean more abortions, because unmarried women get more abortions than married women do. This represents "a short and simple causal chain that the Supreme Court would be wise not to set in motion," according to Schaerr.

The problem, however, is that that chain of logic does not prove causality--and Schaerr freely admits this. “It is still too new to do a rigorous causation analysis using statistical methods,” he told the Post's Dana Millbank. “The brief doesn't even attempt to say conclusively that this reduction in marriage rates has been the result of adopting same-sex marriage.”

I'm going to fix me a drink now.

But drinking can lead to unprotected sex and that can lead to more abortions. So do stupid arguments against gay marriage cause more abortions than they possibly prevent?

Even if the relationship was true (a big stretch of an if), why should gay people seeking to get married bear the responsibility for other people's actions? Surely people in same-sex marriages don't have more abortions than the general population. Accidental or unwanted pregnancies in homosexual marriages are typically a bit fishy, yeah?

HMM, I have a good idea, I think RayJ may need to start a new sub-forum just for this sort of discussion and it should be titled: Totally absurd and ridiculous things people believe....

And that would differ from 'Political Discussions', would it? ;)

Perhaps simply re-naming the existing sub-forum would suffice.

Point taken.

But, but I thought gays shouldn't get married because they can't have children?

Logically Gay relationships and marriages equates to nil births and abortions.

I see. So, abortion is evil and should be avoided. So, why don't they ban abortion?

Wouldn't not aborting babies be the best way to avoid abortion?

Edit: Also, why not an infinite number of abortions? If it permanently reduces the marriage rate and therefore permanently increases the abortion rate, why stop counting x number of years in the future?

There are still spontaneous abortions. So the only way to be sure to avoid them would be to ban all procreative sex.

The Queen of Heaven got knocked up without getting knocked up, so we need to ask the Holy Spirit not to stop planting his seed too.

Because luckily this Supreme Court wasn't in charge when Roe v Wade was decided.

I have to credit Howard Stern with enunciating a reason that conservatives should support gay marriage rights: it will decrease the number of gay men/women who marry heteros because it's the socially accepted thing to do -- which leads to damaged/abandoned marriages. Defense of marriage? Allow everyone to marry whom he/she chooses. (Oh, I know what the Tea Party's comeback is: then you'll be able to marry your gerbil.)

So the conservatives are saying that their marriages are so fragile, that their spouse would use just about any excuse, no matter how unrelated to them, to get out of it?

The only thing more fragile is the peace in Springfield. On Simpsons, if a blackout occurs there is approximately 0.04 seconds before there is an all out riot and car fires. Similarly, if gay people get married, the conservative's wife will sense a disturbance in the force, throw away her ring, kick them in the balls, and run out to a waiting lesbian in a convertible.

I still never understand this.
I married. I married my wife seven years after I received my first invitation to a gay wedding.
I have no reason to think that if the gay wedding had been legal, it would have made any difference in my choice to marry my wife.

How in the hell is the nature of my neighbors' relationship having any impact on my relationship?

Because, if the SC approves gay marriage, they are going to make the Mall Wart FEMA camps operational. Then, those that resist big brother will be interned, and forced to have gay sex while listening to an audio tape of the Communist Manifesto.

PS: The nutters are so nutty now, that who needs to read The Onion?

There is no reason to believe that making abortions illegal will reduce the number of abortions. No one has an abortion for fun or because they like to be called dirty names by a picket line of good Christians. They have abortions for financial reasons or because of rape, incest, the youth of the parents, regret, etc. This won't change by making abortions illegal. Drugs are taken for fun and making them illegal, locking users up for longer and harsher sentences has not noticeably diminished the drug problem.

Legalizing abortion was primarily a public health issue, not a moral one. Even the Southern Baptists supported limited legalization before Roe v. Wade.

Abortion will go back underground for the poor, the rich will go to other countries and the Catholic abortion, D&Cs to restore a woman's periods, will return for the middle class. All so that Christians will be right with their non-existent God. Presumably women and doctors will be executed for the first degree murder of fetuses. Because abortion is murder and it is premeditated.

Oddly enough, the only proven ways to actually reduce the numbers of abortions aren't even considered by the anti-abortion people. What reduces the number of abortions is education, widely available, low cost contraception, especially long term contraception like IUDs and the biggest one, eliminating poverty so that children are less of an economic issue. The rich and the middle class have lower rates of abortion than the poor do.
