Merged Gaza just launched an unprovoked attack on Israel

While I was writing this I was having a parallel chat.

A friend is writing a book on Sufism. He's been invited to a Sufi madrassa in Konya. He asked if I wanted to join him.

We'll be living as sufi mystics in a madrasa studying the Quran. Sounds awesome. I agreed instantly

Neither of us are muslims. He's a philosopher. Aparently its a big honour. So that's cool.

Anyway. Perhaps I'll be converted

Allah Akbar

That's not what is happening.

The Hamas - Israeli war, and the intransigence of Hamas, made it clear to Israel they need to take Gaza over completely. In a situation where Hamas is willing to sacrifice every Palestinian life to keep the conflict going, and enough Palestinians being cool with it, has changed the Israeli game plan.

Israel has the last 20 years have tried very hard to find an Islamic country who wants to take it over, to maintain safety. Nobody wants to touch it with a long stick. So Israel is on their own.

The last conflict, together with the last 70 years have made it clear to the Israelis that there will probably never be a situation where the Palestinians of Gaza will want to peacefully coexist. Its not just religion. Its such a complicated mess of Arabic tribal allegiences among the Palestinians. Anyway... there's no peace in sight.

If Israel wants peace with Gaza, its increasingly apparent, the only avenue left is to make it into a police state ruled by Israel.

I think that's what is happening. Israel gets all the brownie points for showing extreme restraint and patience. But enough is enough.

For those who negatively judge Israels actions, what else should they and could they have done? Other than committing collective national suicide.

The situation Israel is in is so extreme and bizarre, there's no historical equivalent. There's no other example in history of a people showing as much restraint as Israel has, considering how they have been treated.

I'll repeat, what else should they do?
This is the West Bank, not Gaza. Illegal Jewish settlers have murdered over a thousand Palestinians there.

Aha. My bad. I missed that detail. Netanyahu is a cunt

Netanyahu has been claiming for years that all of the West Bank belongs Israel and that Israel is a land for Jews only. Months before the October terror attack, he stood in front of the delegates at the United Nations with a map depicting all of the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel as one single entity and talked about Israel "since 1948".

One would have to be completely clueless about Netanyahu, his political faction, and recent history to believe there was ever a pause in the seizing of Palestinian land and resources and the building of settlements in the West Bank since Netanyahu came to power over 20 years ago.

The change in settlement activity is its acceleration and the open declarations by high government officials that Israel is going to take every scrap of land they claim was once under Jewish rule, including Jordan and parts of Lebanon and Syria.

DrZoidberg has me on ignore so he won't see this, but I did want to point out an underlying premise in his post. He said

Israel has the last 20 years have tried very hard to find an Islamic country who wants to take it over, to maintain safety. Nobody wants to touch it with a long stick. So Israel is on their own.

He's talking about the permanent displacement and imprisonment of a population due to their ethnic identity and place of origin. He's talking about outsourcing the job of prison guards to other nations so Israel doesn't have to deal with those pesky refugees and pissed off farmers. And he's acting as though the displacements and dispossession of Palestinians by Israelis stopped at some point and only resumed when Hamas terrorists attacked Israeli civilians, even though he knows the illegal settlement building and theft of land and water has been going on for most, if not all, of his life.

Israeli police attack journalists in Jerusalem, fracturing wrist of CNN producer

Israeli police attacked a group of journalists outside the Old City of Jerusalem on Tuesday evening, including a CNN producer who suffered a fractured wrist in the violent incident.

Police officers also damaged photographic equipment and confiscated memory cards from journalists who were outside the Lion’s Gate of the Old City covering Ramadan prayers.

On Tuesday, Muslim worshippers, barred from praying at the Al-Aqsa mosque because of wartime restrictions, gathered outside the walls of the Old City to perform the Tarawih prayers of Ramadan. But police prevented them from praying and pushed them away. The worshippers relocated to a street inside the nearby Wadi Al Joz neighborhood.

Police then relocated the worshippers one more time to a spot near the Old City walls when, moments later, officers threw stun grenades at the group. Two journalists were detained at the scene as officers assaulted them and damaged their equipment. Several other journalists at the scene who were documenting the unfolding incident, including CNN’s senior producer Abeer Salman, attempted to intervene but were pushed away.

After the two journalists were released, Salman and other journalists went to check on their colleagues. Police ordered the journalists back. Footage shows the group acquiescing to the police instructions when an officer in plain clothes – possibly indicating a special police unit – grabbed Salman’s hand, twisting it and causing a fracture in the wrist.

I've seen advertisement for a documentary about journalists being targeted by Israel.

Since October 7, 2023, more journalists have been killed in Gaza than in both World Wars combined. While the world remains silent, we must raise our voices towards injustice. In this poignant new documentary, Robert Greenwald will expose Israel’s crimes against journalism and humanity.

Because Hamas gives journalist accreditation to Hamas fighters to prevent them from being targeted by Israel. Israel isn't buying it. Western leftist press are gullible idiots

Don't allow yourself to be manipulated by Hamas' bullshit

Israeli military suspends battalion involved in assaulting, detaining CNN crew in West Bank

What your article proves is that Israel takes protecting the lives of real journalists very seriously

BTW, the Ultra Orthodox brigade is a brigade of forced conscripts who are all conscientious objectors. Until now they haven't had to join the army. They are very resentful of being draughted. They're typically placed together and given assignments where they can't fuck anything up. Because they are useless soldiers. I guess they managed to fuck it up anyway

What your article proves is that Israel takes protecting the lives of real journalists very seriously

I don't think you have a mathematical proof because another alternative hypothesis on the table is that the Israeli govt takes it seriously when the journalists are not Muslim. It could just be a marketing thing--so if there is a chance they can accuse journalists through propaganda of being Hamas or Hamas sympathizers, they don't have to take news about it seriously.

Nah, just allow yourself to be manipulated by Israel’s bullshit.

An independent press is a threat to authoritarians everywhere.
Are you really that naïve to think that journalists moonlighting as Hamas or Islamic Jihad operatives constitute anything remotely approaching "independent press"?
Are you really that naïve to think that Hamas or Islamic Jihad operatives are moonlighting as CNN producers and photojournalists in such numbers that attacks on reporters doing their jobs can be justified? Or that there is credible evidence that the journalists who have been attacked, injured, or killed were all, or even mostly, Hamas or Islamic Jihad operatives and Israel is just sitting on that evidence for no apparent reason?

BTW, Israel has suspended the battalion responsible for the attack on the journalists.

The army announced Monday it was suspending the Netzah Yehuda battalion after soldiers were filmed assaulting the CNN crew last week.

Netzah Yehuda is a unit of ultra-Orthodox soldiers that has been linked to abuses of Palestinian civilians in the past, including the death of a 78-year-old Palestinian American man after his detention by the battalion’s forces in 2022.

Do you think you know more about those CNN reporters and crew than Israel does?

Israeli settlers killed a Palestinian farmer on his own land, in front of his father. Yes, again

It's the third time in a month that Israeli settlers in the West Bank have murdered Palestinian farmers working their own land and in front of their families.

On March 13 we related the story of Mohammed Shnaran, from the South Hebron Hills, who saw his two sons shot in front of him, one after the other: Amir, 29, was killed; Khaled, 34, was seriously wounded. Mohammed was beaten on the head with clubs by settlers who invaded his barley field.

Two weeks later – last week – it was the story of a different Amir: Amir Odeh, 28, the father of two toddlers, who was murdered in front of his father in the fields of the village of Qusra.

This week, the victim of violent settler-criminals was Mohammed Faraj, 39, who was killed in the family's fields near the settlement of Tekoa.

What possible justification for these cold-blooded murders could the settlers offer? Just the usual, racism and religious bigotry:
Ahmed asked Yehuda, whom he refers to as the settlers' "team leader": "Why are you here? What do you want here?"

"This is our land," the settler replied.

"Did anyone sell it to you? Did anyone give it to you as a gift? Did the state give it to you?" Ahmed wanted to know. Yehuda replied in the negative.
"So how is it that you say it's yours?" Ahmed asked, in feigned naivety.

"The patriarch Abraham gave it to us," came the response.

Ahmed: "The patriarch Ibrahim gave it to you? Fine. The patriarch Ibrahim is your father and my father. He gave to you and he gave to me. He gave to Yitzhak and he gave to Ismail."

The settler Yehuda objected. "Abraham gave the land only to the Jews. Like it or not, the land is ours. I am the law and I am also above the law."

This is not justified, of course. But it's in Judea and Samaria, not Gaza. So it's not really what this thread is about.

Not justifying the deadly attack of course, but I think this is noteworthy about this guy:
Mohammed's wife, Arin, is 35 and is pregnant with the couple's sixth child.
Six children at 39. The reason so many Palestinians have so many children is that they are using it as a demographic weapon against Israel, like Yasser Arafat wanted them to.

This thread is about terrorism, murder, the racism and religious bigotry that inspires it, and the racists and religious bigots who commit it in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, and increasingly in Lebanon.

So, some kind of Great Replacement strategy? Every Palestinian with as many children as American families had in the 1960s is part of the plan to replace the European immigrants and their descendants with native born non-Euro Palestinians?

Better than Plan Dalet, anyway.

Ah, an inconvenient truth.

Historically, farmers have had large families, even those in North America. That seems a more likely reason.

And why would Palestinians in ostensibly Palestinian territory need defense against Israel? It’s a mystery.
