I am a fan of this quote:
lifesplayer.com
“...the games will become indistinguishable from reality. ...there would probably be billions of such computers and set-top boxes. ...it would seem to follow that the odds that we're in base reality (NOT a simulation) is one in billions”
- Elon Musk
So he's talking about simulations on a large number of affordable small devices - not huge supercomputers.
The steps would be - simulations with keyboard and mouse, VR simulations, and having an interface with a brain.
This is a bit what an interface with a brain could be like: (which involves a lot time scaling)
Here is a recent development - Genie 3 - which can also create realities based on paintings or video-game style visuals.
I'd recommend watching at least the first 30 seconds - or 60 seconds.
The start demonstrates a simulation within a simulation.
Does anyone think it is impossible that one day people could have VR experiences that are close to being indistinguishable from reality? I think in the future we will approach that.

The possibility of being in a simulation, video game, or matrix...
