Like craven, boot-licking little shits, Google maps has kissed Big Orange Daddy’s fat ass and renamed Lake Ontario Lake America.

I would like a suggestion for an alternative search engine to use, particularly for academic papers. I’m already fed up with Google for poisoning everything with AI.

Google maps, just now:

Perhaps they have only changed it for people located in the USA?

U.S. Federal Authority
The Executive Order: President Trump signed an order on August 27, 2026, to rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America" within the United States.
Federal Maps: The U.S. Department of the Interior and federal mapping agencies must update their official records and electronic documents to use the new name.
Domestic Reach: The president holds the power to control official federal naming conventions inside the United States.

It would be pointless for Google to not conform as all federal documentation including maps will call it Lake America.

I believe that is the case, making it somehow all the more insulting.

Google maps several hours ago, via PZ Myers:

Since Google, last I looked, is not part of the federal government, there is no reason for them to do this.

If the turd in the White House decided to rename Canada “America’s 51st state,” would Google go along with that, too?

I now see that Google has changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, per Big Orange Slob’s orders. Fuck Google.

When I looked at it from Australia it currently has "Lake America" in brackets...

And there's this:

I mean he chopped down a symbolic cherry tree given by an international ally to build an unapproved golf course, too, didn't he?

It would be petty for Google to not conform.

Be thankful it is not Lake Trump and The Gulf Of Trump.

It would be petty for Google to not conform.

Hmm? How so?

So it would be “petty” for Google and its asinine AI not to conform to anything the Big Orange Shit decided to do? If the turd decided to officially rename Canada “The 51s U.S. state,” it would be “petty” for Google not to go along with that? Huh?

And since when is mindless conformity a virtue?

Apple Maps on my phone says “Lake Ontario”, but I do notice the words are entirely on the Canadian side of the border.

Trump was petty in renaming the lase as if it would actually affect Canada.

Google responding with pettiness serves no purpose.

Pettiness is the act of focusing on trivial, minor, or insignificant matters. It often involves making a big deal out of small things to annoy, punish, or vindicate oneself against someone else.

It would be petty for Goggle to make a case out it.

Like it or not Trump does have the federal authority to change the name. Limited to federal government.

You are free to call it Lake Ontario or Lake Pood if you like.

AI Overview
No, President Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" does not apply to state governments
Scope of the Executive Order
Federal Use Only: The directive legally applies exclusively to the U.S. federal government, instructing federal agencies, departments, and databases (like the Geographic Names Information System) to update their maps and official communications. No State Authority: An executive order cannot compel state or local authorities, private companies, or international entities to adopt the new name.
State Response
Refusal to Comply: State officials can choose whether or not to recognize the change in state-level documents. For example, New York Governor Kathy Hochul publicly stated that New York will not use the name "Lake America" and will continue calling it Lake Ontario.

Gog;e is free to choose what to do regardless of the reasons regardless of what you think.

Sure it is. And?

And for me, this craven ass-kissing decision is precisely why I want to quit using the damned thing.

That, and for the AI crap you seem to like posting.

As I have said repeatedly I am an independent and call it like I see it regardless of left or right. As we are putting our cards on the table I could not give a shit what you think, it is your typical simplistic narrow minded ideological response. I'd expect better from a supposed philosopher.

As much as dislike Trump he has the authority and it would be pointless for Google not to conform. Google has a lot to consider when making these kinds of decisions. It is a trivial issue.

Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite.

The lake will be there tomorrow regardless of what we call it.

Google does have contracts with the federal government they want to maintain.
