The head of the Minneapolis police union says George Floyd’s “violent criminal history” needs to be remembered and that the protests over his death are the work of a “terrorist movement.”

“What is not being told is the violent criminal history of George Floyd. The media will not air this,” police union president Bob Kroll told his members in a letter posted Monday on Twitter.

Which has fuck all to do with the circumstances that lead to him being killed by asphyxiation, you piece of fucking garbage.

These unions denying and defending against all wrong doing is a huge impediment to reform.

These hordes of conservative ditto-heads hero-worshipping cops because they are dickless authoritarians who dogmatically bow down before any uniformed paramilitary unit that they perceive as being a tool in the continued oppression of racial minorities is a huge impediment to reform.
fixed that for you.

Police Unions are unions in the same sense as the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea is any of the things in its own name.

Real unions are for workers to have bargaining power against management and ownership. Police 'unions' contain management and the purpose of these groups is to protect them from accountability from the public.

To paraphrase Ali - ain't no teachers who ever choked me out.

The product regulation equivalent would be prohibiting the sale of gin, whiskey, and vodka because of cases of methanol poisoning.

The People's Republic of North Korea is, in fact, situated in the northern part of the Korean peninsula.

Bob "beats 12yo girl while shouting racist slurs, but claims he isn't a racist" krill? That Bob Kroll. Fuck that guy with a garden rake.

Police unions are public unions. The public are the owners. Bargaining power against ownership and protection from accountability from the public are one and the same.

Police unions are markedly different than any other type of union, in that no other union operates the way I mentioned, nor do they have any sanction to maim, kill, or imprison the populace.

no, the institutional governmental body is the owners. the public are the thing the police are there to control, not obey.

The police union has none of those sanctions - the police do.

Mr. Kroll is well-known in the Minneapolis area. He has a racist record. And he has been re-elected to the presidency of his union by a large margin which strongly suggests he is popular with his rank and file.

None of it does. But that does not stop racists, bigots and other assorted assholes from bringing it up.

How does that follow from the snippet in your OP?

There's no distinction between the two.

If they were reimagined some way I might be willing to accept the necessity for them, but as it stands they serve to block reform and reinforce entrenched bad behavior. They also put downward pressure for conformity that makes whistleblowing less likely.

Sorry, but there's no comparison to the IBEW, or the Teacher's union, or a union for Revenue Service employees.

Anyone concerned about government unions right now is missing the plot.

Of course there is. The police are the ones who are sanctioned to enforce the laws. The police union is an organization that represents police officers and their interests to their employer.

Of course there is a comparison. Police unions represent their members. If they block "reform" it is because their employer is either too stupid or too weak to negotiate a better contract or change employment laws.

You are both right. He wrote it incorrectly as there is no North in the title.

North Korea (Korean: 조선; MR: Chosŏn or literally 북조선; MR: Pukchosŏn), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK or DPR Korea; Korean: 조선민주주의인민공화국, Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asiaconstituting the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The country is bordered to the north by China and by Russia along the Amnok (known as the Yalu in Chinese) and Tumen rivers, and to the south by South Korea, with the heavily fortified Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two. North Korea, like its southern counterpart, claims to be the legitimate government of the entire peninsula and adjacent islands. Pyongyang is the country's capital and largest city.

I think they don't want to discuss that teachers, and the IRS don't beat people or kill people.

The union boss is defending the indefensible and smearing the victims and and I'm sure worked hard against any real reforms in the past. As you mentioned, the Minn PD has a poor reputation with minority communities. I'm sure any movement to hold police more accountable got significant push back by this asshole, and gets significant push back from just about every police union boss.

I am sure you are correct. And I am sure that the mistrust within the minority communities of the Minneapolis police force is well-earned.

But I know that effective change/reform is best achieved when there is buy in by the people who have to implement it. I also know that those who have perform the day to day operations have a much better idea of what is more likely to be effective than any upper management or politician.

Yes, Bob Kroll is an obstacle, but that does not mean the police union is necessarily an obstacle. The president is a temporary obstacle. Look, if the citizens of Minneapolis had actually given two shits about this over the past 30 years, a different police union contract would have been negotiated. The reality is that until very recently, the minority communities in Minnesota (and Minneapolis) counted for nothing and were not considered "Minnesotans" (an attitude that is still prevalent in many parts of the state).

The politicians of the city and the state have always had the legislative clout to get things done. Now, there is more public support to move things along. It is a shame that it took such a tragedy to get things moving forward. It will be a bigger blot if nothing of substance chances. But make no mistake - change could have occurred anytime if enough people in Minneapolis had actually given a rats ass about it, police union or not.

You're right, North Korea doesn't have "North" in its official name, like South Korea doesn't have "South" in its. Nor did West Germany and East Germany.
