Guilty Pleasure Albums

What are some albums you listen to that you wouldn't be completely forthright about the fact?

When I was younger I loved Alanis Morrissette's 'Jagged Little Pill' and it was even one of the first cds I ever owned. These days I recently downloaded the greatest hits of Savage Garden and Natalie Imbruglia, and even have a few Hanson albums in hand.

In reality I couldn't care less what people think of my music taste, but I think some of those would get me a few nasty judgments .

If one had flipped thru my CD book back in the 90's, surrounded by the major metal bands at the time, one would've found almost all of Yanni's albums. I dug the symphonic sounds and ethnic instruments along with the sedative-like effects I felt when listening. So much so, that I took to learning many of the songs on the piano back when I still had ivories to play.

The first album I ever bought was an ELO album, although I lost it a long time ago and no longer remember which album it was. I have no embarrassment about liking ELO.

The second was a Hall and Oates. Similarly, I can't recall which one. I'm mildly embarrassed about that, but not much.

The third album I ever bought was Worlds Apart by Saga. If you weren't a teenager in the 80s, you have no idea what I'm talking about. Here, let me help:

Yeah, that's embarrassing. In my defense, I was in my early teens. I think everyone is a little stupid at that age.

Wouldn't how forthright you are, and the judgments you could expect to receive, be dependent as much upon the particular people with whom you're interacting as upon the particular albums? In effect, wouldn't your "guilty pleasures" vary contextually?

When I was going to high school 1000 miles from where I lived and staying in a dormitory, I was border line depressed and listened to a lot of Lobo.

Occasionally I'll go back to the early eighties to revisit what was then mandatory for any teen guy to like if he was with a girl, at least in this part of the country. This band never really made it nationally but was every girl's favorite here in Cleveland. So, just smile, hug, put up with it, and never, never admit to liking it. It was part of the guy code.

On vinyl?

I own a Racey album, Carpenters, Abba, usual stuff from being an 80's disco queen. ;)

I also have a few Long Play singles including Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

I would have to dig into my albums which are packed away at the moment to see what else I have.

I never considered FGTH as 'guilty' pleasure. Now, those Simple Minds and Duran Duran...
For "nearly current" (I tend to be late in following trends) guilty pleasures of mine, I'll nominate Pink, Green Day, and Linkin Park (except their last album).

"Now That's What I Call Music" albums. About 15 of them.

Horribly overplayed at the time of purchase, and i only tend to like four or five songs on the whole CD, and i really should be buying the albums of an artist i like to see what else they do.... Can't help it, can't explain it, hide them in the back of the DVD shelves.
But i may be done with NTWICM. They put 'Blurred Lines' on the last one i bought. They edit out so much of it that they figure someone'll find offensive that it's like listening to speed bumps. Jarring. Dammit, if you can't play the song, don't put it on the CD!

I've always loved music and have rather eclectic taste but some of the possible groan worthy? In grade school I had The Archies and The Cowsills and several of those horrible television advertised multi-artist albums. In my later years I went through a bit of a punk stage and had The Human League, Devo, Adam and the Ants and The Vapors.

I still love Abba and don't feel guilty about it!! Oh and I still have all those silly albums!

HMM...I wouldn't consider those bands to be 'punk'.

But I do think that there are way more many Abba fans out there who won't admit it. :p
