I will add more to this later about the rising levels of hatred toward minorities later, but I'll start out by mentioning one of the most brutal murders against a transperson that I've ever heard about. It happened in New York and five suspects have been arrested. Imo, some of it is due to the political demonization of minorities of all kinds.

CNN —
Five people have been arrested in New York and charged in connection with the disappearance and murder of a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota, whom police say was tortured and abused for weeks before his death.

New York State Police launched a missing persons investigation for Sam Nordquist on February 9, following a welfare check request from his family, according to a news releaseFriday.

Human remains believed to be those of Nordquist were discovered on February 13 in a field in Yates County, about 50 miles southeast of Rochester.

Law enforcement officials then discovered evidence suggesting that Nordquist “was subjected to ongoing physical abuse” between December 2024 and February 2025, according to the release.

“Sam was subjected to repeated acts of violence and torture in a manner that ultimately led to his death,” Capt. Kelly Swift with the New York State Police said at a Friday news conference.

His body was moved “in an attempt to conceal the crime,” Swift added.

Swift described the case as “one of the most horrific crimes” she has ever investigated in her 20-year law enforcement career.

Jewish people in the EU continue to face high levels of antisemitism, according to the latest survey from the bloc's Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA).

More than 8,000 Jews in 13 EU countries, including Germany and France, were interviewed - with 96% saying they had encountered antisemitism in their daily life.

The vast majority had experienced harassment online.

The FRA's director, Sirpa Rautio, warned that Europe was facing a "wave of antisemitism" - driven partly by the conflict in the Middle East.

I've also read that people at the US border who are asking for asylum are often being treated harshly, being sent back immediately before they even have a chance to be heard. If I can find that article, I'll add it.

The EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) found that widespread rights violations at EU borders—failure to assist migrants in distress, mistreatment, and abuse—are not properly investigated. The agency called for robust monitoring at borders and stronger accountability mechanisms. The European Ombudsman said Frontex needed clear guidelines for assessing maritime emergencies and issuing mayday relays for boats in distress and called for an independent commission of inquiry into deaths in the Mediterranean Sea. In October, EU leaders expressed support for Poland after it announced it would suspend access to asylum at the Belarus border, a decision that could breach international and EU law.

Australia is a vibrant democracy that mostly protects the civil and political rights of its citizens; however, its reputation is tarnished by some significant human rights concerns. These include the cruel treatment of refugees and asylum seekers as well as its failure to address systemic discrimination against First Nations people. Indigenous people are still overrepresented in Australian prisons. A referendum in October on The Voice, which would have allowed Indigenous people to advise Parliament in the form of an advisory committee, was defeated in every Australian state.

Australia remains the only Western country without a national human rights act or constitutional charter. However, Parliament has opened an inquiry on the country’s human rights framework and is considering developing a human rights charter. In June 2023, Australia evacuated the last refugee detained on the island country of Nauru under its offshore processing policy but started sending new asylum seekers to the island just two months later. The Australian government maintains a policy of offshore detention for asylum seekers who arrive by boat and in 2023 allocated additional funds for the practice. Serious concerns surrounding the treatment of children in custody and use of “chemical restraint” in aged care have yet to be seriously addressed by the government.

In March, an Australian soldier was charged by the Office of the Special Investigator with an alleged war crime in Afghanistan, the first case of its kind in Australia. In June, a court sided with three newspapers in a defamation suit brought by a former Australian Special Forces soldier over coverage of the murders of civilians during the armed conflict in Afghanistan.

“This year, we have seen that violence become increasingly planned and deadly, leaving LGBTQ+ people feeling unsafe in countries across Europe,” ILGA-Europe’s Executive Director Evelyne Paradis said in a press release.

“We have seen proof that anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech is not just the words of marginal leaders or would-be autocrats, but a real problem with dire consequences for people and communities,” Paradis added.

The report, published every year and covering 54 countries in Europe and Central Asia, as well as four European institutions, is based upon publicly available information, complemented by interviews with human rights activists, legal experts and NGOs.

Hate speech is also on the rise, the report finds — much of it related to trans people. Hate speech from politicians and state officials was reported in 23 countries across Europe, as well as Azerbaijan, while there was an increase in transphobic speech in five other western European countries, including “hostile media reporting.”

Yet, “convictions of hate crime perpetrators have increased” in 10 European countries and Azerbaijan, and an increasing number of officials and mediarepresentatives have been taken to court for hate crime and hate speech in seven European countries.

Why so much hatred? How did this happen? I know that in the US the far right, especially Trump, and his ilk have certainly made it more acceptable to promote hate. I'm not as familiar with the other countries, although I have read in the past how Australia has treated some of its native people. Sorry I couldn't put this all in one post. For some reason, the forum wouldn't permit it and I'm not technically knowledgable enough to figure out if I was doing something wrong. Anyway, add your own examples. This hatred is happening almost everywhere, and politicians are often supporting it, or doing nothing to try and stop it. Humans are the most dangerous animals on the planet, but I think you all already knew that.

Hate spiked in 2017-21, subsided for about four years, then went on a raging tear again starting in late 2024.
What could POSSIBLY account for that?

Western Europe is going the way of the US. The US has a few years head start but the far right (Hate) are making headway around the world at an alarming rate.
Yes. That was my point, but why do you think hate is on the rise? Why do so many humans dislike or hate those who are different from themselves? I just don't get it.

But, it's not just happening in the US. It's happening most everywhere. Check with you all later.

It's depressing. It seems like all efforts to reduce this senseless hate go nowhere.

Well, since you bring it up again, back in this post, whom were you addressing when you wrote the following?

Have fun with your hate /s.

Which other member or members were you accusing of hatred? And what evidence did you have against them?

I don’t know, maybe you should ask this guy?

A Syrian asylum seeker who viciously stabbed a 14-year-old boy to death and knifed several others was seen 'laughing' as he went on a rampage through an Austrian city. The 23-year-old man, named locally as Ahmad G., allegedly shouted 'Allahu Akbar' before launching into a vicious attack just before 4pm on Saturday afternoon. Spine-chilling images captured the suspect was seen grinning at police officers while they surrounded him with weapons during his arrest in Villach, near the borders with Italy and Slovenia.

There has been much study seeking to understand the roots of hatred vs tolerance. I'll offer three points:

* Having an out-group person as your neighbor or work colleague leads to empathy and tolerance. This is why integration and DEI programs are good ways to improve tolerance and reduce irrational hatred.

* The tolerance/hatred divide correlates strongly with the left/right political divide. Here's one of many articles discussing this. TLDR:
Harm/care, Fairness/reciprocity, Ingroup/loyalty, Authority/respect, Purity/sanctity

* (This is just my own musing.) I wonder if the tendency for irrational antipathy against out-groups is correlated with "rational" antipathies. (I'm reacting to my impressions of Thailand where out-group races and lifestyles are tolerated, but so are criminals.)

Or, better yet, we could ask the guys who use THAT single case to impugn Muslims or Arabs generally but remain stubbornly silent when presented with cases like Timothy McVeigh or Marjorie Taylor Greene.

A Syrian asylum seeker who viciously stabbed a 14-year-old boy to death and knifed several others ... allegedly shouted 'Allahu Akbar'

"They're eating the dogs.. They're eating the cats."

That you think Americans -- especially MAGA types -- aren't drenched in hatred; that you think one must go back to "last century" to find an example of an American hating an out-group -- this just shows what a bubble of fatuous ignorance you're trapped inside. Do you ever get outside of Santa Monica?

There's an old saying: "Dog bites man, that's not news. Man bites dog, that's news!" Perhaps this, combined with your fixation on hate-filled fascist news sources like Truth Social or Xwizzer, explains why you didn't know that your own Ilk is drenched in hatred.

Hope this helps.
