Yet another example of out and out racism....

Dearborn, Michigan nurse is suing a hospital for racial discrimination after the facility honored the wishes of a patient who didn’t want a black woman taking care of her, reports WXYZ.

Teoka Williams, who’d worked at Beaumont Dearborn since 2008, says she overheard a woman say she didn’t want a “black bitch” taking care of her. Williams complained to her manager, who responded by instructing Williams to stop going into the woman’s room—even though there was another patient in the room who needed care as well. A white nurse was dispatched to the room instead.

According to the lawsuit, when she complained to Human Resources, they told her that patient’s wishes had priority over her ability to do her job.

Williams said the incident made her feel “harassed, humiliated and discriminated against.”

I haven't stayed a night in a hospital in about 60 years. At 8 years old you don't have a lot of choices about who comes into your room. But I like the idea that if I am ever stuck in a hospital again, I can keep rejecting nurses for whatever reason I want, since the "patient’s wishes have priority over his/her ability to do their job". So I'll keep complaining until they send in that proverbial hot and horny nurse. All good. :)

If the Proverbs talked about horny nurses, I would be reading more proverbs and holding up signs at sporting events like: "Proverbs 666: For he that sayeth, "Bring unto me a big bosomed nympho to heal my wounds!", shall have his desire granted."

But don't call that patient racist nor deplorable. That would be mean.

Only mean, horrible elitists accuse people of racism just because they did something racist.

My mother was a racist whose worst instincts were exacerbated by pain. She would routinely lash out at the nursing home attendants (all of whom were black), calling them niggers, etc.... A number of the attendants refused to deal with her. But there were a few dedicated ones who either were used to this from my mother's generation in St. Louis or who understood that it was the pain took excellent care of her.

That nurse was harassed and discriminated against. And I am sure she was humiliated by the hospital's response. In the short run, I think the goal of calming the patient down was good, but I think the hospital should have told the patient that they would not discriminate on the basis of race in assignments.

Agreed, but the hospital may have feared a lawsuit from the patient. It would be easy to demonstrate that the presence of the nurse caused the patient stress and that such stress is medically likely to harm the patients recovery. It would also be easy to show that the patient assignment are largely random in the first place, so the request could be easily accommodated than that the nurse would be doing no less work and thus is fully able to "do her job". Thus, it doesn't seem the hospital could claim that civil rights laws required them to refuse the patient's request.

The hospital would be at the mercy of a jury to rule that despite the hospital's avoidable actions contributing harm to the patient, the hospital is protected from liability because they acted to protect their employee from emotional distress. Obviously, any reasonable jury should rule against the patient and the courts should decide that hospitals are not obliged to honor any requests not directly related to the type of treatment they get, no matter how much distress and medical harm the refusal might cause the patent. Otherwise request like Elixir's or requests to requests to get free medical treatment would have to be accommodated. However, it wouldn't be the most absurd lawsuit successfully awarded by a jury.

You just need to read the right 'bible'. Or, alternately, read any bible with the right state of mind. ;)

You're right, and that's just fucking depressing. :(

I doubt that woman would have called her a bitch if it had been Pam Grier "Coffey" weilding her sawed off shotgun. Shit, if I were ever in the hospital I'd gladly let Pam Grier look after me.

Save the locker room chatter for the locker room please. Nuff said.
