Horns Up Heavy Metal fans?

Coal Chamber has a new album out, only a decade after Dez likened the band to fourth graders, and vowed they would never reform again. I'm glad to see them back, especially since their reforming has no impact on DevilDriver. The sound of the band has evolved somewhat, Dez's signature rounds/chanted vocals from the previous Coal Chamber albums (and the first DevilDriver album), are seriously scaled back, and only feature prominently in a few of the songs. All in all, it's a pretty good effort, but I can't help feeling that Coal Chamber breaking up and allowing Dez to concentrate on DevilDriver was the best thing that could have happened at the time.

I saw Coal Chamber play about a year ago for the first time, and I was impressed with the sound and talent in their performance. I didn't really like the stuff they made when they first came out, but that live show sounded awesome, especially with that beautiful female guitar player dancing around while jamming on the guitar. I have a weakness for female musicians.

I could not get into UABB when I saw them at Mayhem Festival last year, my buddy and I walked away from the stage about half way through their set. Of course, we were thirsty and in desperate need of more beer at the time. Recently I was turned onto their cover of the Lil John song Turn Down for What with Ice T, and have given them another chance. I guess it was an off day for them, as I like most of their studio work. The song you linked is not one of my favorites, but then again I fucking hate Texas.

haha. I think everybody who wasn't raised in Texas hates it here, and I can see why.

From what I've heard of the new Ghost album it sounds pretty goddamn amazing. I'm thinking about driving or flying up to Ohio to see them play on the 27th. They'll be in St. Louis on 10/6.

I wasn't raised there, but I spent 4 years there, and too much of it was spent dealing with the law. I did meet my wife there, however, and we are still together 25 years later, so there is that.

That single sounds really good, I can't wait to hear the whole album. October is a ways out, and it doesn't look like tickets are available yet. Any idea who is touring with them?

Yeah, most of the cops here are dickheads from my experience, like that asshole who got caught pushing kids around at the pool last week. It looks like Purson is touring with Ghost. I've never heard of them before, but I don't hate the few songs they have on Youtube. Kind of psychedelic classic rock sounding. I think I might need to find some mushrooms for that show.

I had not heard of Purson before, either, but it does seem that their style will mesh well with Ghost.

Nuclear Assault Has a new EP out. Old school hardcore thrash that sounds just like Nuclear Assault should sound:

I was still listening to the Nuclear Assault EP when I posted the link, and had not heard the last track, Died In Your Arms, at that point. Wow, it is a departure from their typical brand of hardcore thrash. It still has the Nuclear Assault vibe, but slows it down, and makes a foray into doom metal. Maybe not that much of a shock for long time fans, even back in the '80s they experimented with other stylistic elements here and there.

Nuclear Assault is a little too hardcore for me. The only thrash band I listen to regularly is Slayer. I was supposed to go see this band Kittie play tonight but they cancelled for some reason. By the way you should now be able to purchase tickets for Ghost. They went on sale last Friday if I'm not mistaken.

Kittie has been around for a long time. Mercedes and Morgan were 15 and 16 when they cut their first album, Spit, in the late '90's. It was a bit rough sounding, but I was into it, and the next few albums got progressively better. They only had one album, Funeral for Yesterday, that wasn't all that great. They tried to go more mainstream hard rock with that one, and it did not work out so well. I have never seen them live, but I would imagine it would have been a good show if they hadn't cancelled.

Thrash is definitely a mixed bag. Slayer has come a long way from their first album, but have always been more on the speed metal end of the thrash spectrum. Nuclear Assault is solidly in the hardcore punk crossover genre, even though they were never a punk band, like a lot of the crossover thrash bands. Not many of the crossover bands made it big. Not like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, but I was into punk rock before thrash became a thing, so the crossover scene resonated well with me.

High on Fire's new album, Luminiferous has been out for a few weeks now, but I only started listening to it about a week ago. It is a solid effort, and just might be their best album yet. Their stoner metal sound is still there, but a bit more refined this time around. The full album is up on YouTube, give it a listen:

Breaking Benjamin exists pretty much on the opposite end of the metal spectrum, arguably more alternative than metal, but they put on a solid show, and I have really been digging their new album, which came out last week. Here is a sample if you haven't heard it:

Five Finger Death Punch is probably one of the most divisive metal bands out there these days. For some reason a lot of metal fans absolutely hate them, I don't really get the hate, I thought their first album was really fucking good, but they dropped off a little bit after that. That said, they have a new album coming out in August, and the first single is out. It seems a bit a departure from their previous album, which was a bit of a departure from the album before, all the way back to the first one. We will see once the full album comes out, though, it can be hard to tell from a single. This song is decent enough, and they poke a lot of fun with the video:

I'm really digging that new High on Fire album. I've been listening to it for the last month since you posted that. I'm pretty excited about the Summer Slaughter show coming to Dallas this coming Monday. For some stupid ass reason the show starts at 3:00pm when most people are still at work, but I think I'll probably be able to catch Acacia Strain, Veil of Maya, Born of Osiris, and Arch Enemy. Acacia Strain is the band I most want to see.

Reprising an age-old-former-board-thread: Metal fans unite, anyone have any new, worthwhile recommendations?

Not really picky about the sub-genres, just hoping to be wowed by some fresh bands. Just checked out the new track from the upcoming Down EP and was not impressed, Anselmo just sounds...old.

Machine Head's new album sounds promising, Killers and Kings.

Whatchu got?

I have been jamming to Ensiferum, Sabaton, Korpiklaani, and Alestorm. I orderd all four of Alestorm's cds as well as the cds I'm missing from Ensiferum. Once I get my credit cards dealt with I intend to get the cds I'm missing of Sabaton and Korpiklaani.

I've been getting into some Slavic folk metal, too. I have been getting into the music of Kalevala, Alkonost, Svarga, and Arkona. Unfortunately those bands' cds are tough to find. Even online.

A friend of mine says that Five Finger Death Punch is some fine metal. If anybody knows some good metal let me know because I have been trying to get back into music cds.

I went to see Slipknot and Lamb of God last night. Bullet for My Valentine was the first opening act I saw, we missed the first opening act, Motionless in White, but we heard the end of their set as we were coming through the gate. They seemed like a fairly typical screamo band from what I heard. Bullet for My Valentine has some good music, but I just have trouble getting into those screamo vocals. Throughout their set I was thinking that if they just replaced the singer they would kick ass.

Lamb of God entirely kicked ass, it was the second time I have seen them, and they have a much more polished set. The vocals went out for half of the second song, though. Randy was up their screaming his head off, and no one could hear shit, it was kind of amusing. They have a new album out, and played a couple of songs from it. It is a damn good album, here is the first single from it:

I think this was the 5th time I have seen Slipknot, and the first time with their new drummer and bass player. They were as tight and awesome as ever. Their new album came out last year, and if you haven't heard it, you probably aren't into Slipknot.

Next concert for me is GWAR in a couple of weeks. It's gonna be interesting with Oderus gone, he was pretty much the mainstay of the group since the beginning. They went through their new female lead singer, Vulvatron in just a year, and have already replaced her. Apparently she was too much of a drunk. It must be pretty bad when GWAR kicks you out of the band for substance abuse problems. Not sure who they have fronting the band now.

Smoker: I am digging Baroness's sound. I am going to check more of their work out.

Yeah they're a good band with a unique sound. They've got a new album coming out in December, the first one since two of their members left the band. They still sound pretty good in my opinion.

Slipknot and Lamb of God are coming to Dallas next weekend. I'm pretty pumped about that show because I've never seen Lamb of God, and Slipknot has always been great every time I've seen them. Lately I've been jamming out to the new Ghost album. It's pretty impressive. I'm definitely going to see them when they come in October.
