How should west respond to potential (likely) Russian invasion of Ukraine?

you are totally screwed

Why are you whining about this? Increasing the cost of doing war might bring Putin back to the negotiating table. I've said it from the very beginning (day 1) that the imperialists will continue to attack until China (and India a little) cut you off. Isolate Russia, and maybe the war will stop. Having said that, not much of a chance this will deter China. But we need to try...

UK diplomat on Putin's plan to invade Spain

Sorry, but I'm not going to open up any link that I don't know. But yea, no secret. After Russia is done raping Ukraine, they will invade more sovereign countries. Ukraine is just the tip of the spear. We need to increase sanctions, sanction countries helping Russia, dramatically increase defense spending.

The other issue is that Russia's economy is heating up at the moment. Interest rates climbing higher and higher. There are employment shortages, due to the extended war mobilization, which contributes to inflation as well, which is currently at 10%. Russia has money, they can continue on, but it is going to get hotter and hotter as the economic pressures created by extended military operations will impact the Russians more and more. Russia can technically do the attrition thing military wise for quite a while, but not economic wise.

At some point Russians will start noticing the 20% inflation rate in two years and wonder why Ukraine is still being waged against after 5 years. These things have been known to cause sparks.

It would be nice to spend smart (to advance America's standing and promote democracy) instead of to satisfy the perverse megalomania of one demented fascist individual. We could easily bury them financially if there was a will to do so.

I am not whining, I am laughing at US attempts to destroy Russia.

Sure, head in a sand is good strategy of dealing with reality,

The purpose of the sanctions is to provide incentives to encourage your side to quit killing people. How would that destroy Russia? If your side dosn't want the sanctions, stop the invasion. I guaranty you that the meannie Nato troops will not invade Russia. Most westerners do not want war. It actually is bad for the economy long term.

That was a remarkable rebuttal.

Obviously, you can't argue the facts, with the Central Bank lending rate at 20+% while inflation is well above what is desired, hence those high central bank rates. Russia's walkover in Ukraine is now standing around 40 months and that is after Putin got his stooge in DC to step back support of Ukraine. Russia is advancing in Ukraine at WWI levels. The butcher's bill is through the roof and Putin is needing to kill more of his Government.

Things are not going well, and they can't continue like this for several more years. Or I suppose maybe they could. Russia is kind of used to awful leadership.

We know that this is a lie.
Purpose of the sanctions was to have a regime change in Russia. By now most knowledgeable neocons know that this is not going to happen but they have no other option.
Russia will continue beating the shit out of Ukraine as long as it takes to achieve stated goals of the Special Military Operation.

? You're not paying attention. Trump loves Putin. We want the war to end. The purposes of the incentives is to bring Putin back to the negotiating table. But if your side is going to continue grinding the fuck out of countries, you shouldn't get economic benefits that come from trade and international economic development. I personally could care less about who is leading Russia.

So much for freeing Ukraine.

LOL, that's not the purpose. The purpose is to "save" Regime in Kiev in order to continue aggression against Russia later.
But if your side is going to continue grinding the fuck out of countries
You have it completely backward. It is your side who is engaged in that.

The purpose is stop the illegal invasion of a sovereign country, Ukraine. After the war is over, and Russia is willing to following international laws again, I'd be happy to advocate that we stop those meannies from Kiev from attacking Russia and being mean to your country. But where is Kiev? I don't recognize it nor can find it on the map.

Try Kyiv. But there are some maps that read Kiev.

What's the difficulty?

Here's the difficulty: Ukraine is a sovereign country. They have a right to the land that is in their country. They have a fucking right to not have their children kidnapped, cities bombed and looted. And they god damn have the right to name their own capital. And they have named their capital Kyiv. Russian imperialists consider the capital of Ukraine to be Kiev. (Don't mean to sound rude.)

Apologies. I misunderstood.
