The problem with that is that since WWII, Europe managed to stop fighting in a war every 30 or so years. Putin wants to return to the glory days of 19th Century Europe, where people kept dying in stupid fucking skirmishes over land.

We were in the golden age of peace, and Putin wants to end it and return to the days of the growing and declining empires... regardless the toll it'll have on everyone.
