• Welcome to the Internet Infidels Discussion Board.

Is this a good aspect of Sharia law?

That isn't an answer to my question.

I never said it did any good.

Let's keep things in order. You want the victim to punish the criminal. I asked how you propose to punish someone who has offended you. If you don't want to lock him up, I'm sure you have your reasons. What do you want to do to your criminal?

I asked a question.

Is it more just that the government punishes someone or if the victim punishes someone?

Because if putting people in jail does no good it is only punishment.

Okay, fair question, but you will have to define "punishment" for the purposes of the discussion, before we proceed. What are the choices of punishment a victim might mete out?

It depends on the crime.

If somebody steals your property you could take some of their wages and make them pay you back, or make them do things like paint your house or clean your yard or change the oil in your car.

Instead of for-profit jails we could have companies made up of convicted criminals that made products and instead of profits going into the pockets of the rich they could go towards paying back victims. The criminals could also be taught marketable skills.

But simply punishing people for the sake of punishment serves nobody and many times makes the criminal more dangerous.

The idea of punishment for punishment's sake is a primitive idea that has no usefulness.
