Imagine if Aesop became deified and his fables scriptures. We would be praying to talking animals. Our morality limited to interpreting his fables.

Or we could be sacrificing virgins to ward off climate change, hurricanes, and forest fires..

Political decagons made by interpreting goat entrails.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermeticism

Hermeticism, also called Hermetism,[1][2] is a religious, philosophical, and esoteric tradition based primarily upon writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus ("thrice-greatest Hermes").

It could have been worse. If Hermeticism had taken deeper hold, we would be living in a pretty weird world.

As a divine source of wisdom, Hermes Trismegistus was credited with tens of thousands of highly esteemed writings, which were reputed to be of immense antiquity. Plato's Timaeus and Critias state that in the temple of Neith at Sais there were secret halls containing historical records which had been kept for 9,000 years. Clement of Alexandria was under the impression that the Egyptians had forty-two sacred writings by Hermes, writings that detailed the training of Egyptian priests. Siegfried Morenz has suggested, in Egyptian Religion: "The reference to Thoth's authorship... is based on ancient tradition; the figure forty-two probably stems from the number of Egyptian nomes, and thus conveys the notion of completeness." The neoplatonic writers took up Clement's "forty-two essential texts".

The answer freakin' IS 42!

Could it be that it's just that, well, the 4 and the 2 look cute together?

I think the Christian world could do worse than adopt the visions of Saint Bridget of Sweden, particularly her vision of the foreskin of Jesus being preserved and located in Rome. Surely this would give the faithful a specific locus for their veneration. The holy foreskin isn't just a fringe topic. It would keep them out of mischief.

If they found what is thought to be JC's feces I suppose that would be Holy Shit.

How so?

Hermeticism was a magic orientated theory. It supported alchemy, astrology and similar ideas. It was a component of neo-Platonism. Imagine a world steeped in new age type nonsense and superstition.
