The Boundary Waters area in northern Minnesota is one of America’s most beautiful wilderness areas. As one of its final acts, the Obama Administration refused to renew mineral rights leased to a company named Twin Metals to mine for copper and nickel very near the Boundary Waters and the city of Ely.

“The Boundary Waters is a natural treasure, special to the 150,000 who canoe, fish, and recreate there each year, and is the economic life blood to local business that depend on a pristine natural resource,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a joint statement with Interior Secretary Sally Jewell. “I have asked Interior to take a time out, conduct a careful environmental analysis and engage the public on whether future mining should be authorized on any federal land next door to the Boundary Waters.”

The Trump administration moved Friday to renew leases for a copper and nickel mining operation on the border of Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, reversing a decision made in the final weeks of Barack Obama's tenure in office.

The decision, made public Friday in an Interior Department legal decision, marks a win for the Chilean mining firm belonging to the family of billionaire Andronico Luksic, who rents a home to Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, in Washington.

I have never in my life HATED anyone as much as I have grown to hate this man. Hate him to the point of tears. Hate him to the point that it is truly unhealthy for me. He is literally destroying this country, and I feel helpless to do anything about it

Best veggie burger I ate was in Ely, MN. Ely is a nice town, has a hospital. It is on the south boundary of the boundary waters.

A large lake (Lake Vermillion) is near the Soudan mine, which is a relatively famous mine. Though I don't know if Vermillion is part of the "boundary waters".

I'm just not certain how to interpret how mining would affect the waters up there.

What I do know if that there is a tremendously unacceptable link between the person looking to mine up there and the President's daughter and Advisor. Once again, the Trumps continue to just give the finger to protection from emolument driven bribery.

The worry about mining up there is that the runoff from the mine(s) will sufficiently degrade the water quality. And that the mines themselves will encroach on the wilderness. The Native American communities are worried about the effect that changes in the water will do to the quality and abundance of their wild rice harvests.

To be fair, the communities in the Iron Range are divided on this issue, since mining has historically provided good jobs and wages for the miners in the area.

The BWCA (Boundary Waters Conservation Area) do hold a special place in the minds of Minnesotans. Motorized boats and cars/truck are prohibited. You can see wolves in the wild. You can canoe and see ancient Native American glyphs on the stones. If you camp, you have to cart your waste out with you.

Ely is home to the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear center. I have spent a number of summers up in that region, and it is truly spectacular and humbling to visit.

And, if they just happen to "forget" to pay the rent for a couple of years, no need to go after them for it, after all they are very busy people. Nope, none of that has anything to do with Daddy Warbucks being president and doing a little back scratching.

Yes, it is just happenstance. And the company contracted in Puerto Rico just happened to be from the one pony Montana intersection that the Sec. of Interior was from.

I get the hate/disdain for Don the Con. However, it reads like you are letting your emotions get ahead of the impact. Now, if El Cheato causes a war on the Korean peninsula, then you could be right. But lets not put the war before the Twiddle de Dotard...

However, his tweaks won't be the destruction of the country. Presidents just aren't that powerful. We survived the industrial age, and have largely repaired our air and water ways for example. Don't feel helpless, get involved. At least in Florida you have a state to fight for. My state is already deeply blue, so I can't really encourage more anti-FFvC candidates. If you have the resources help Democratic candidates or generally the DNC.

Much as I despise the D party, I will be going to caucus later this month, in the hope of helping to set a path to getting rid of Cory Gardner in 2020 and purging Republican Representatives and State officials in 2018.
