Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) announced Tuesday morning that he will retire from Congress more than a week after allegations of sexual misconduct against the congressman started surfacing.
“I’m retiring today,” he announced on the Detroit radio show “The Mildred Gaddis Show.”
He endorsed his son, John Conyers, III, to replace him in Congress.

Good riddance. The House and Senate have had far too lax rules about this stuff for far too long.

There are critics of US democracy.

It is controlled by money. It is controlled by corrupted and corrupt men.

It is morally bankrupt.

Some of these critics say the problem is democracy itself, as if greater centralized power has ever been the right answer.

The problem is the US democracy is weak. It is pathetically weak.

The only real issue is how do we strengthen it?

What does it mean to care for and nurture a democracy? Where do you start? What are your goals? What things hinder democratic control?

It's about time somebody asked these questions in a nation that likes to talk about democracy all the time.

He resigned due to pressure from fellow Dems.
Meanwhile the GOP not only refuses to put any pressure on the child-rapist Moore, they and Trump are fully endorsing him and funding his campaign.

Just in case you hold the infantile delusion that both parties are "equally bad"

So much for "innocent until proven guilty". We don't need such niceties when the goal is a witch hunt.

Actually, they did. They wanted him to drop out, but they have no legal recourse. Of course, their issue with him is his firebrand status and they can't trust him for a vote, not because he liked to date barely moral teens.

Don't worry, Moore-Coulter is alive and well.

Meanwhile in other congress news: former Democrat congressperson Corinne Brown was sentenced to 5 years for her 18 felony convictions yesterday and all anyone could think was "wow, don't those Republicans look bad now."

A Trump endorsement yesterday and a newly opened channel of funding to Moore from the RNC this week sure doesn't sound like a rebuke of him or any pressure to drop out. It sounds more like some Republicans gave the public appearance they had ethics while trying to ensure he wins.

One former Dem going to jail for financial fraud (with zero current Dems still supporting her) isn't nearly as important to sensible human beings as the sitting president and the RNC continuing to actively try and get a likely child molester elected.

Also, if everyone in Congress was booted for the unethical acts their companies have engaged for personal profit, there would be few left.

That's an excellent idea. You should implement it.

This was a good move by the Dems. They took the moral high ground. This leaves the Republicans with Trump and Moore (assuming Moore wins) draped all over them for the 2018 elections. We're talking political commercials that can't be shown in prime time that would peg the Truth Meter. I can't imagine the Republicans are going to cling to Al Franken (the SNL comedian) and the Hooters girl for very long.

I don't think this makes the Dems look good, it just doesn't make them look bad, which has value to it as well. Conyers is 88 years old, so this seemed a no brainer politically. While incumbancy at his level means a boatload of money to his district, Jebus! Should have got the hook a little earlier. I don't like the In The Seat till I'm Dead at 100 thing.

Surprise Derec is defending the racist, woman hating child molester!
To be fair, the child molesting is alleged, which is Derec's point. We do know that Moore has lied about not knowing a couple of women, so that definitely hurts Moore's case.

Regardless, the racist, woman hating part is quite true, and hardly unique to Derec. The state of Alabama is about to put Moore in the US Senate.

Derec regularly declares black men (and children) to be guilty of things when they're killed and have no chance of defending their integrity. Also, yeah, it's not unique to Derec. Alabama and Derec are kind of politically close. I mean, Alabama once wanted to vote for David Duke. So, he's a bit biased. To add--there are a number of accusers and their stories are substantiated by non-partisan witness accounts of nefariousness by Moore. The public can come to a reasonable conclusion here, but at trial (if there were a trial) Moore should be given the same rights as anyone else.

Uh...that would be a big, fat, resounding "No!"

John Conyers' son -- the one he wants to replace him in Congress -- was arrested this year for felony domestic violence ... TMZ has learned.

John Conyers III got in a fight with his girlfriend on February 15, 2017. Law enforcement sources tell us he accused her of cheating after going through her computer at around 2 AM. The argument allegedly escalated into physical violence ... she told cops John body slammed her on her bed and on the floor, pinned her down and spit on her. She says she tried calling the cops, but he took her phone.

The woman claims he then chased her into her kitchen where she grabbed a 10-inch knife to protect herself, ordering him to leave the house.

She says he grabbed the knife and then swung at her twice, stabbing her, cutting her right bicep which required 3 stitches. She says he then chased her back into the bedroom, pinned her against the bed and slapped her.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, as they say...
