Julian Assange, the controversial founder of WikiLeaks, may soon be forced out of Ecuador’s embassy in London and turned over to British authorities, according to a new report.
Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno is set to finalize an agreement with the U.K. government to lift Assange’s asylum status, The Intercept’s Glenn Greenwald reported, citing a source within the Ecuador’s foreign ministry.
Assange has been holed up in the embassy since 2012, after he fled Sweden over allegations of sexual assault and rape. Though prosecutors dropped the case last year, he still faces arrest for breaching bail conditions should he leave the embassy.
And his work using WikiLeaks to publish thousands of classified documents could see him facing more charges in the U.S.
U.S. intelligence agencies believe that WikiLeaks coordinated with Russian hackers to release emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 election. Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly investigating connections between WikiLeaks and Roger Stone, a longtime adviser to Donald Trump before he became president.

Man, what a get that would be. Cut him a deal that would release him to anywhere he wanted to go, and he'd start talking. And sweet baby Jesus, he has a lot to say. Or maybe he'll just clam up because he knows he'd be killed pretty quickly. Maybe put him in the witness protection program and let him live out his life somewhere in northeast Texas. He may not be hide-able though.

Or maybe he's better off with the Brits keeping him rather than releasing him to Trump's America where pardons are given to shitbags on a routine basis.

Either way, it doesn't look good for him. And that makes me just a smidgeon happier.

I think Assange is a bit of a narcissistic asshat, but this is still ridiculous.
 
What provoked this planned expulsion is Julian Assange supporting the separatists of Catalonia. The Spanish authorities objected and pressed the Ecuadorian ones about this issue. Since he refused to shut up about it, he is to be expelled.

I'm relieved that this odd adventure is to end, though I'm rather surprised that the Ecuadorian embassy staff have not tried to smuggle him out.

I would rather have him spend the rest of his life living in a closet. Likewise I'd rather leave Snowden to live out his life in Russia. Bath fates worse than death.

He took a turn to the dark a long ways back, unless you think he is a hero. He has had shoes on Russian TV, and it is curious wikileaks never compromised Russia or China two of the most politically and socially abusive countries in the world. I'd like to see him compromise Israel.

In the time of the Arab Spring he admitted intentionally releasing specific US communications in areas for maximum effect. He stepped beyond a whistleblower to anti American agent and there are consequences. He probably thinks it is a cloak and dagger movie, but it is real. People have freedom of choice, but not freedom from consequences.

He is a teenager who never learned pranks have consequences.
 
There's been talk for a while that the Ecuadorians wanted him out. Apparently he's a bit of a slob.

I assume since the British police were allowed in to remove him from the embassy, this was done with Ecuador's blessing.

It followed similar comments by Mr Moreno that he had "repeatedly violated" the terms of his asylum.

Mr Moreno said Assange did not have the right to "hack private accounts or phones" and could not intervene in the politics of other countries, especially those that have friendly relations with Ecuador.

In a nine-page memo, published by Ecuadorean website Codigo Vidrio, the WikiLeaks founder is prohibited from "interfering in the internal affairs of other states" or from activities "that could prejudice Ecuador's good relations with other states".

Mr Assange, who was granted asylum in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in 2012, was also told in the memo his pet cat would be confiscated and taken to an animal shelter if he did not look after it.

Probably because it was a fake charge drummed up for the sake of getting him out of the embassy so that the US could grab him and extradite him. Now that they've done that, the middle step wasn't required anymore.
