WASHINGTON — Representative Kevin McCarthy on Thursday abruptly took himself out of the race to succeed John A. Boehner as House speaker, apparently undone by the same forces that drove Mr. Boehner to resign.

Mr. McCarthy’s candidacy was damaged when he suggested in an interview on Fox News last week that the House committee investigating Benghazi had the political aim of damaging Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Well, that may have been the problem also with the old speaker. I don't think the Republicans have a single person in their entire catalog of elected representatives who can fill the post of Speaker and maintain a civil atmosphere in the House. The Repuglicans will trundle somebody up to the top of the hill soon and elect him so they can move on to their next agenda item....SHUTTING DOWN THE GOVERNMENT. You don't need to know how to speak to do that.

Apparently, McCarthy has dropped out because of the threat of a sex scandal. There are rumors he had an affair with a Congresswoman from North Carolina. If this is true, Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.) has to be Washington's worst girlfriend.
