We have military (NG) in the streets “putting down” protests over abducting both immigrants and citizens.
We have the military on the streets honoring Dear Leader with a massive Birthday Parade that will cost me and you tens of millions.
I am increasingly at a loss to find any meaningful distinction between this regime and Putin’s.
My only question is “is it too late”?
Is there any hope of salvaging a democratic Republic from this mess?

Toddler needs to blow out candles

This past election made this all but inevitable. Of all the things Trump lies about on an hourly basis, he didn't lie about this. He said he would use the powers of his office to employ the military against protesters. He's now using the powers of the office to deploy the military against protesters. The Supreme Court said that a President wasn't liable for official acts. This is an official act.

If U.S. troops begin mowing down fellow Americans, it will be shocking but not surprising (if that makes sense).

I used to be a range safety officer (RSO) at a firing range in a very blue part of SoCal. Most of the people who came to the range were exactly the types you'd think they'd be. They weren't fucking around then and they're not fucking around now.

Rhetorical question: how many left wing militias are there? At the range I worked at, there was a good sized right wing group of approximately 20 people. They used to train in house-clearing exercises at each other's homes.

I think that for the most part, liberals thought it was all a big joke; that it couldn't happen here.

Minuscule but vocal groups inhabited the Democratic party and leadership either outright supported them or stood by and said nothing while at the same time driving away voters in their millions. They did zero to concretely warn people what truly dire straits we're in. The self-blowjob giving "Fourth Estate" did the same goddamn thing.

What's going on here in SoCal may turn out to be nothing, but it could also be the start of the Can't beginning to happen.

Well it's always "support" roles. The National Guard will be there to support ICE. Though it's nothing ICE cannot do themselves. Further, these National Guard troops can be considered to be of questionable training. After their basic training, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that their one weekend a month training consists largely of sitting on their ass waiting for 1600 to roll around. My point: These dudes of questionable training and likely little if any experience will be in some of the most volatile areas of Los Angeles. Further, in most cases the National Guard will normally work with local law enforcement. I don't think this will be the case this time. There will be seasoned LA police experienced with dealing with the people in the areas they serve and my aforementioned inexperienced guardsmen mixed in. What could go wrong?

This move is a serious threat to our basic freedom. If it succeeds every time there is an anti Trump protest he will deploy the national guard to put it down. I hope everyone in LA will come in and block the streets and prevent any movement by the guard into downtown LA or wherever they’re deploying.

Trump's America...and Russia? Our boy is certainly catching up.
The big lie: Simply repeat your lie enough times and make belief in the lie a requirement for advancement. You'll be amazed at how many people will toss out their credibility and integrity for the privilege of being in the good graces of the leader. Trump needed no coaching on this skill; he's prepared for it his whole life, and he's now molded the party in his lies. Politicians in South America are now copying him.
The press: Russia is the third deadliest country for reporters (topped by Algeria and post-US invasion Iraq)...over 180 murders of reporters from the 90s through 2006, after which the number soared. Trump uses lawsuits and access and constant badgering to rein in the press, with far too much success. Then there's his use of "enemy of the people," a phrase most associated with Lenin -- and ultimately a phrase that was criticized and banned by Khrushchev. Our modern Repubs have repurposed it.
The gulag: Russia has a century of prison camp systems. Trump clearly needs more prisons, whether outsourced or donated by friendly Texans, to keep us safe from those murdering, raping foreigners.
Rudy Giuliani: Here we've drawn even. Both used this delusional sycophant, then discarded him when it was clear he was a babbling husk, leaking hair dye and thunderfarts.
Reformers: At least, Trump just fires the people who would investigate for fraud.
History books: The Ruskies have been rewriting history and expunging 'bad ideology' since Lenin's time. This has been stepped up in Putin's time. We have a lot of catching up to do, but Trump and his enablers are now busy assaulting public schools, the university system, and museums. Can the USS Theodore Bilbo be too far in the future?
Oligarchs: Putin plays to the common Russian but has the crucial backing of oligarchs who amassed colossal fortunes since the USSR came apart. Trump of course muses constantly on the Forgotten Man and has no use for the ultra wealthy. As he told us in his first term, a lot of wealthy people aren't gonna like me, after we pass my tax bill." And do the ultra wealthy like Trump??? I guess I should research that.
Ambition to acquire territory: Do we really need to flesh this out? The canal. The Gulf of America. Greenland. All of Canada. Freaking Gaza. Yes, these should all be jottings on a psychiatrist's notepad, but they come straight out of the cloudy mind of our toddler tyrant.
On June 14, next Saturday, we'll be able to see him in all his glory, reviewing his big beautiful parade.

To add context, Alan Kohler is a financial journalist and has done the financial section of the 7pm news for decades. He is not someone who uses Jim Cramer-esque hyperbole. The original title of this article was, "The United States has proven itself and incomprehensible and unreliable ally";

That 1,038-page bill with its ludicrous official title, and all sorts of unrelated things thrown in so it would be hard for Congress to reject each bit, was an earlier sign that the United States has become a bit of a joke and not a serious country anymore. What's not a joke is that the oligarch Musk obviously thought he had bought the presidency and is complaining now that having spent $US300 million getting Trump elected, the guy is not doing what he is told.

Examples of America's unseriousness have been building to the point where the US isn't even a comprehensible ally, let alone a reliable one, or a safe place to invest — global investors are now steadily reducing their exposure to American assets.

This is very much how the world sees Trump's America. I disagree with the premise of the OP however. Seeing as US farmers are struggling to maintain production, I'd say the US is becoming more like North Korea instead. All you're missing is flamboyant military parades celebrating Dear Leader.

Oh, for fuck's sake.

Side note - I thought the National Guard was under the authority of the Governor.

Looks like Angelinos are taking my advice to heart. They’re blocking overpasses. They’re challenging Trump. This could turn into something really big. Or really, really bad.

Unfortunately, a lot of them are assholes hurling rocks at random vehicles. They're not challenging Trump's policies, they're just raising hell for anyone near them.

They should focus on Trump. I agree.

I came here to post that article.

That's not even remotely accurate. Much like the CNN meme of peaceful protest like repeating over and over ad fucking nauseum you're seeing the same few events over and over again.

Wouldn’t surprise me. Trump is probably telling the media what to say under threat of being cut off. Fuck Donald Trump. I hope this really does blow up out of control now. Every city in the country should explode with protests. I hope the national guard will even revolt.

We are in a bad situation. If we resist with violence, it gives them the excuse to tighten noose. If we resist peacefully, they'll spin it and tighten the noose. If we do nothing, it becomes normalized.

just to clarify;

part 1.webp

and this:

will now be the same thing. As an Antifa attacking Trump. Same memes. Same Bullshit. Same Purpose.

"But I'm not a Trump supporter". Fuck off. You love fascism and you always have. Your kind is despised by both sides.

I am surprised there hasn't been a thread started already on the 2025 edition of the LA Riots. This time, the riots are pro illegal immigration.

Cars set on fire or had rocks dropped on them. And not just police vehicles, but Waymo vehicles as well. Stores are also getting looted.
Foreign flags are being waved, while US flags are being burned by the rioters.

But I am sure some people on here will say that (just like the riots in 2020) these are "peaceful protests" and completely justified because ICE is deporting people. :rolleyesa:

Some photos from these "peaceful protests":

If they hate America this much, why don't they just leave?

Apparently the protests started off quite peacefully. Later in day the usual renta-mob showed up and it all kicked off when they went on the rampage. Entirely predictable. LAPD is shorthanded (thank you former mayor Garcetti and current Marxist mayor Karen Bass who were all for defunding the police) and were struggling to contain things. So the place was trashed and looted, cars torched and freeways shut down because of these morons. I had to drive through DTLA yesterday evening to LAX but other than helicopters I didn't see any obvious signs of the protests. I am not very familiar with DTLA so I don't know exactly where the bother was. I did watch on TV some maniac driving a minivan through the area. He didn't have any PD chasing him. Eventually he pulled into a street where he probably lived and waited for cops to show up.

"Pro-fascist spin" == naming a thread clearly, and not obfuscating what it is about with non-sequitur references to Russia?
