Left Behind rapture

James,

If anyone doubts the provenance of the movie (haven't read the books), I recommend a look at Matthew 24. Its all in there.

A.

The movie is one possible interpretation (and a dramatic one) of Matthew 24. Christian opinions vary wildly on this (and just about every other) subject. But the word "rapture" is not in the Bible; it is a later convention to describe some people's take on that passage.

The earlier beliefs were much more simple as described in I Thess 4:16-17. Paul's writings never have Jesus setting foot on earth - folks float up and meet him in the air. Of course Paul wasn't much on "round earth" geography, but that's another story.

The later writers (of the gospels) couldn't resist the temptation to give their hero-god credit for "calling" the Destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.

Atheos,

When you were a Church of Christ preacher were you with the Premillenial, the Amillenial, or the ones that held to Realized Eschatology?

Why does that question make me think of this:
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said, "Stop! Don't do it!"
"Why shouldn't I?" he said.
I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!"
He said, "Like what?"
I said, "Well, are you religious or atheist?"
He said, "Religious."
I said, "Me too! Are you Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, Buddhist or what?"
He said, "Christian."
I said, "Me too!
"Are you Catholic or Protestant?"
"Protestant."
"Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?"
"Baptist!"
"Wow! Me too! Are your Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?
"Baptist Church of God!"
"Me too! Are you Original Baptist Church of God or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?"
"Reformed Baptist Church of God!"
"Me too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?"
"Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915!"
I said, "Die, heretic scum!" and pushed him off.

Amillenial.

ETA: Actually I guess what I believed at the time was that Matt 24 (and Mark 13) were apocryphal descriptions of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. Both end with the "this generation shall not pass" caveat.

The "Lived and reigned for 1000 years" bit is from Revelation 24:4. I believed it was a metaphor for the period in which we live now, not a future period. Of course that was when I believed the bible was uncontradictory and that the "simple" 2nd coming described in I Thess 4 had to be taken into consideration when interpreting the "complex" descriptions in Matt 24 and Revelation. Now it's a lot easier because I understand that people just had different opinions about these things and there's no need to get all wrapped around the axle trying to resolve them.

The movie Airplane! is a spoof of a dead serious and utterly awful disaster movie called Airport. No one has ever heard of Airport

Without Airport, Airplane! isn't nearly as funny. Except for Barbara Billingsley's part.

I certainly have! but that is not what made Airplane! such an amazing cult classic... it was the entirely unique*, one-of-a-kind humor that Leslie Neilson brought to the movie that made it so classic and unforgettable.

"Can I ask you an important question?"
"What's that?"
"an interrogative statement testing one's knowledge, but that's not important right now..."

* unique until very recently. a fairly new TV series called "Angie Tribeca" is a cop show that is wholly inspired by that brand of comedy. If you liked that type of humor from Airplane!, the show "Angie Tribeca" takes it into the modern TV cop drama, and does a damn good job with that unique comedy genre

Nielsen did a series 'Police Squad', which was basically the same kind of comedy, in the early 80s. It was followed by the Naked Gun movies, which were directly based on Police Squad.

yup... all Leslie Neilson. Check out Angie Tribeca... the only comedy in this genre that wasn't Leslie Neilson... and you won't miss him (but you will hear him channeled by the actors often).

The Rapture would work fine on a flat Earth, but since it's a sphere, the righteous will go flying in all directions, like a huge starburst.
The Good Shepherd will be gathering his flock from the furthest reaches of the cosmos .......

Eh, after a few orbits they can align to the proper flight path to Planet Kobol.

Meh. He has eternity to get the job done, so it's not like he's in some kind of rush and needs to finish off on the first day.

There is a whole new trend in eschatology to the effect that, as the believers soar on up to "the heavens", they make their Final Witness to us left-behinders. Turns out Final Witness is evangelical for losing control of the bowels, as your coroner would put it. We all better hope the Rapture doesn't happen at the end of the 10 a.m. shift at Big Boys, because the left-behind work crew is going to be crazy mad, and all the overtime pay in the world won't make them open to the Good News. Just wait til all the well-fed Christers in your town take a dump as they fly overhead.

They already shit on everyone in the world by stealing the good stuff through social corruption. G's US indeed.

Question? Is this what Christianity comes down to?

Evangelical Christianity. Christianity isn't one religion. It's many. Each little sect should be treated as a separate religion IMHO.

Fundie Christians are dicks. They are also ignorant because they haven't spent any time researching their own religion. Fundamentalist Christianity isn't possible. Being fundamentalist about any text produced before the advent of the printing press is an idiot. Just the knowledge of how manual text is copied means that there's a huge variation in the text itself.
