Marissa Alexander's 20/yr sentence overturned

Marissa Alexander released from prison.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/27/marissa-alexander-released-jail-warning-shot_n_6558814.html

She agreed to anger two years of "house arrest" (she is allowed to work, take her children to school, go to school herself and keep appointments - basically all a mother of young children does anyway) to avoid another trial at the hands of Angela Corey, but the Judge refused to add another two years of probation on top of that.

This isn't justice (Angela Corey never prosecuted Rico Grey for his abuse of several women) but it is better than what Marissa had before.

true

She agreed to anger two years of "house arrest"
Is "house arrest" easy to anger? :tonguea:

This isn't justice (Angela Corey never prosecuted Rico Grey for his abuse of several women) but it is better than what Marissa had before.
How is that not justice? Ok, a bit lenient, but much better than an unjustified acquittal would have been.

She fired toward three people, two of them children. Then, while out on bail, she attacked her victim again.
Why is domestic violence defended when a woman (and a black woman as well so double PC points!) does it?

Keeping spinning Derec, keep spinning

Keeping spinning Derec, keep spinning
It is your side who is spinning to make Marissa Alexander into some sort of victim when she was the aggressor.

Even Rico Gray's testimony--a direct contradiction of his earlier testimony stating he was the aggressor--doesn't make her what you claim.

This isn't really an issue of which side you are on but simply keeping them plates spinning, Derec. What is the your point? When a person is subjected to continuous abuse over time, when they try to break out of that pattern, it is liable to be violent and they are liable to have a lot of resentment they need to learn how to deal with. Marissa is lucky she didn't shoot the guy. I think this outcome will be helpful to Marissa and possibly direct her away from future trouble. Have you NO CONCERN FOR MARISSA'S WELL BEING?

It's similar to what she would have gotten had she taken the plea deal originally offered. Last time she went to trial and got screwed by Florida's mandatory sentencing rules. This time she had the sense to take the deal.

They didn't declare her innocent. This is a technicality in the jury instructions. They'll try her again. She'll probably get another 20 year sentence if she doesn't have the sense to take a plea deal first.

Unbelievable. You make all kinds of excuses for patriot Zimmermann hunting down and killing an innocent unarmed teenager, but in this case...

Oh.

Right.

In this case, the person with the gun is African-American, and therefore guilty. How silly of me to lose perspective like that. I should have realized.

It wasn't me who resurrected the thread so I do not see how a charge of "spinning the plates" was warranted.

So you admit she committed violent crimes, you just choose to excuse them?
Besides, evidence suggests that their relationship was a mutually abusive one rather than her being "subjected to continuous abuse over time".

I think another couple of years of probation would have been warranted but overall I think the outcome is just. She is still considered guilty as charged (as she is certainly not an innocent victim as feminists insist she is based on nothing but her two X chromosomes) but 20 or 60 years would have been too much for what she did.
I also hope she will be prevented to own a firearm as a convicted felon, which should help her avoid shooting at another boyfriend or husband, which is good for everybody's well being. However I certainly would not take a chance dating her and wonder why any man in his right mind would.

More like: she is both black and female, so automatically doubly innocent. </progressoauthoritarian>

The irony in all of this is that if Ms. Alexander had shot and killed Gray she had a decent chance of an acquittal and most of the people blaming her would be defending her actions (with one notable exception).

Well feminists would still defend her like they defend other women who murder their intimate partners (Mary Winkler, Sharon Nicki Redmond) but why would others switch to defending her?
Besides, she would have had to kill the other witnesses as well (i.e. Grey's children).

This has nothing to do with race. It has to do with her getting her gun and going after him. This is a very different situation than simply carrying your gun--a civilian should never advance with a drawn weapon other than in the defense of others.

Her violence towards him would not have been exposed as she wouldn't have gone after him later. It was that later action that really sealed her fate.

The kids' testimony might nail her, though.
