Merci Mack, a 22-year-old Black transgender woman, was fatally shot in Dallas on Tuesday. Seventeen other transgender people have been killed in the U.S. in 2020, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

Mack was found unconscious in a parking lot by a passerby, according to the police. Residents at the location told police they had heard gunshots around 5 a.m., but police reported no records of 911 calls at that time.

"Her friends say that Merci Mack was a young, upbeat soul who deserved to experience a full life. HRC is mourning with Merci’s loved ones and are calling for a full, thorough investigation into her death," said Tori Cooper, Human Rights Campaign director of community engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative, according to Out magazine.

I was reading about her yesterday. Apparently someone claimed responsibility for her murder saying they were paid for the hit, but it was a lie for attention.

The statement 'Black Trans Lives Matters' has been more visible over the past month or two. Some people get pissy about the distinction between black (or more broadly BIPOC) transgender people and transgender people in general, but murders aren't affecting all demographics equally. BIPOC (possibly more specifically, black in the US at least) transgender women make up an alarming disproportionate number of known murders.

Unfortunately, odds are this thread will turn into half baked statistical analysis despite the fact that the data we're working with probably isn't very good. That's my general experience every time the subject comes up online which is why I'm not one to raise it. Happy to be wrong here.

Just amazing how the media pushes a narrative.

And even more amazing that anyone can be so callous and uncaring.

And for all the other people who’ve been shot? Just fuck’em, right?

Patterns in murders do tend to call attention. If there was a rash of murders of farmers or dentists or red haired people or newspaper columnists or Klan members or anti-LGBTQ activists or women over 6feet tall or men under five feet tall or people with prosthesis, it might be a pattern suggesting that some one or some fgroup was targeting Klan members or short men or whatever.

It doesn’t mean that the murders of other people are not significant or worthy of notice or investigation.

A few months ago Andy Ngo did a twitter thread on the black trans women that were killed, I am not sure how comprehensive it was, but they were involved with prostitution and drug addicts.

So, black transwomen being shunted disproportionately to this shitty lifestyle is the root cause.

Transwomen probably have shittier jobs, more easily fired, and have less desirable and stable guys willing to date them. FInally, guys who have sex with them must be a bit paranoid about it being known - especially guys in the crappy lower unstable segment of society.

But they are not being hunted down by strangers.

I'm not sure we know that.

People being pushed into shittier lifestyles (trans, straight, bi, gay, whatever) especially prostitution and/or drugs IS a root predictor. Not a root cause. The root cause is people who feel entitled or enabled or maybe even pushed because of their own internal short circuitry to hurting or killing people they see as vulnerable. Such as prostitutes.

Residents heard gunfire but no 911 calls says it's a pretty bad neighborhood. Any particular reason to think this is because she was trans?

Not necessarily a 'pretty bad neighborhood.' I'm not familiar with Dallas and an address isn't given so I don't know.

According to the article linked in the op and this article: https://www.hrc.org/resources/violence-against-the-transgender-community-in-2019, Texas has more murders of trans individuals than any other state in the last 5 years and more than half in Dallas, despite the fact that California and NY have a higher population of trans individuals. To me, that bears investigation to determine if these deaths are linked in any way. And to mitigate whatever circumstances put these women in such danger.

What if the answer is non white men?

What if?

My position is that all homicides should be investigated and if the cause of death is deemed manslaughter or murder or similar, then an investigation should be conducted and the person or persons responsible should be charged and brought to trial.

Do you have a different opinion?

The total numbers are quite low. 26 homicides of trans women in 2018 according to your article. That probably doesn't really allow for any conclusions about whether TX is really out of norm here. Also, your article doesn't say that there are more trans people living in California and New York.

That said, of course any homicide needs to be thoroughly investigated and the guilty party(es) brought to justice. But I suspect it will likely be somebody whom Merci knew, not some random trans-hater.

So I guess BIPOC is yet another acronym designed to exclude (or "other" [used as a verb] to use the proper woke terminology) white people.
But I am confused. I though POC already included B and I. What's going on here? Indians and blacks not colorful enough?

Well you are the one talking about an "alarming disproportionate number". What is such language based on if you admit that the data is not very good?

I think the "I" is "Indigenous".

Asians are POC, but black ranks above Asian in the SJW pecking order. Indeed, Asians have been referred to as 'white adjacent', which is of course nearly as bad as being white.

And, of course, black trans is the most sacralized of all.

This covers known homicides of transgender people murdered in the United States. For that 2019 data set, over 20 out of 26 were black. 2018, 18 out of 26 were black. Hispanic people possibly represent the next larrgers group.

BIPOC, like LGBTQ, represents recognition of groups which face similar challenges, but whose causes don't always align exactly. For instance not all issues concerning indigenous rights pertain to the rights of people of colour in general.

Well you are the one talking about an "alarming disproportionate number". What is such language based on if you admit that the data is not very good?

'Disproportionate' was referring to known cases where transgender people have been murdered.

When I was talking about half-baked analysis, I was talking about particular trends of trying to downplay (or in some cases overstate) the murder rates of transgender people against the broader population. It's difficult to come to a meaningful number. While groups such as Human Rights Campaign do talk in terms of numbers, the concerns expressed are based on the particulars of individual cases.

Someone was murdered. That's not an opportunity for your racist screeds. Please stay on topic.
