NAACP issues first ever travel advisory for Missouri

If the goal is the safety of black people traveling in Missouri, then we should be telling them not to drive on the highways. Far more blacks in Missouri die in car accidents than at the hands of racist white people. We need some perspective here.

Yes. You need perspective. It's not meant to be taken literally anymore then saying black lives matter is meant to carry the implication that non black lives somehow matter less. It's a tool meant to draw attention to a particular issue.

Oh, OK. Thanks. Good to know. It's a good thing that black people don't take the NAACP as seriously as I do. I was getting a little worried there thinking about all the black owned businesses in Missouri that would suffer because of a big drop in black tourists and travelers.

This can join the other travel advisories from outside the USA. We still hear about drive-by shootings though I'm sure this happens only now and again.

Big difference--those are actual attempts to identify unsafe areas in cities. And all big cities have unsafe areas, sometimes the lines aren't obvious to an outsider. (A good example is right here in Las Vegas. The downtown casino area is actually a pretty seedy area but it's perfectly safe {other than pickpockets} so long as you stay by the casinos. They have a bazillion security cameras that keep the bad guys at bay. Walk two blocks east and at night you're in drug territory.)

All big AMERICAN cities, perhaps.

There's nowhere in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane that I would feel unsafe walking at night.

Proves what reasonable people already know, which is that the NAACP is a sham concerned only with their self promotion.

The vast majority blacks in America are far more likely to get shot on their own street by their neighbor than if they visit Missouri. IOW, leaving their own home and visiting Missouri would greatly reduce the odds of harm for most blacks. And the odds of them being shot in these areas greatly drops when police officers are present. Why would an organization that pretends to care about black people warn them against actions that make them objectively safer?

Reckless and racist cops are a problem, but are tiny fraction of the problem and threat posed to most black people in their own neighborhoods by their own neighbors. This travel advisory is a self-promoting political stunt. And note, that none of what I said ignores that their are larger societal factors that contribute to the threat blacks face from their neighbors on their own streets.

Specific places do not need to be stated. Things like avoid dark areas or if driving take precautions as far as possible to minimise the chance of police stopping the visitor.

Not just American. I've never known a large city that didn't have an unsafe area.

As I understand, Street Crime in Japan is quite rare. It's been said that you can leave a bag unattended in public there, come back an hour later and it will still be there un-accosted.

Don't try that in the UK; the bomb squad will blow it up.

I recall back in the 1970s, when the IRA were very active in the UK, our school being evacuated due to a suspicious unattended bag. It wasn't until after the bomb squad had performed a 'controlled explosion' that it was found to contain only the lunch brought in by a plumber who was working nearby. :D

Is that what you'd say if there was a gang of black racist terrorists that was targeting white people? That a lot more white people die in car accidents, and therefore that that group is not worth losing sleep over?

Even if that group did exist, it would be pointless worrying about it while heart disease is still an issue.

Sure, I'm not so sure how this holds up in an age of terror bombing, but this is just what I've heard.
