Heartening news! Maybe Discovery will be worth watching again?

TV critics fell deeply, madly in love with new Discovery Channel chief Rich Ross this morning at Winter TV press Tour 2015 when he said he would not continue the network’s trend of telecasting fake stuff.

“It’s not whether I’m a fan of it,” Ross said, which critics let slide. “I don’t think it’s right for Discovery Channel, and think it’s something that has run its course. They’ve done very well… but I don’t think it’s something that’s right for us.”

Is this the sensationalism of promising to stop using sensationalism?

Well, that is part one. Part two is dedicating the Network to broadcasting educational stuff... not reality BS. Discovery managed to just knock it up a level from reality BS to straight up BS. Be like Palladia broadcasting Spinal Tap as a legit documentary.

Hard to say. Actual science and history probably won't bring in the dough, then Ross will be fired, and then the next wave of Dip$hittery Channel will begin. Be interesting to find out.

I thought this was important as well:

Discovery is “more narrowly niched than it needs to be,” Ross said, and that he intends to return Discovery Channel to the “No. 1 brand for whole family and not just for the men in the family.”
It's like Tim Allen is in charge of the programming. Multiple outdoorsman shows, multiple fishing shows, multiple construction shows. Shows about the biggest this and the deadliest that. Fucking awful. Even Discovery Science is dumb, dumb, dumb.

And I don't expect it to get any smarter, any time soon.

And stayed tuned for our new series Gangsta Rapping Dinosaurs, a scientific look at how dinosaurs would perform gangsta rap.

Aww, I was looking forward to new season of Amish Biker Survival Garage: Alaska's Gold.

Ah.

So instead of just outdoorsman reality shows, we will get outdoorsman reality shows and reality shows about how to make sure your drapes match your decor?

You know, shows about bakeries that make vagina cakes and vagina cookies.

Yeah, but for dwarfs making vagina cookies using alien technology in 1940s Germany, you need the History channel.

Tonight on "Secrets of Hitler's Bunker Revealed"

What was the purpose of these strange cake molds? What was the true mission of the SS Genital Confectionary Regiment? The SHBR investigative team explores shocking Nazi use of self rising flour, including interviews with women who survived the notorious camp known as Pumpernickel.

Warning. This program contains explicit material of an adult nature. Parents should use discretion when allowing children to view.

I'm pretty sure Lifestyle Food has that covered.

Yes, but for dwarfs making vagina cookies, you will need to turn to The Learning Channel.

That's a good point, that channel needs reform too. I used to like TLC, back in the 90s when it was halfway decent. I'll wait and see what happens with Discovery. I do wonder if Mythbusters will be affected.

I enjoyed Mythbusters for a time, but it's still an example of what's wrong with Discovery Channel.
