In latest test, North Korea detonates its most powerful nuclear device yet

Possibly thermonuclear, but given estimated yield of ~100kt probably just a strong boosted fission nuke. It is also uncertain how big the devices are and whether they can be fit on their ballistic missiles, although NK claims they can.

Still, the more this goes on the more sophisticated NK nuclear program becomes and more difficult it will be dealing with them. Really, something should have been done about the Kims back during the Clinton administration.

So what do we do now? Continue paying them extortion money and hope they don't launch a missile? Work like crazy on developing more sophisticated ballistic missile defense to be able to shoot the suckers out of the sky? Have a massive preemptive strike on their nuclear facilities as well as the conventional batteries north of Seoul?

Try to get the crazy motherfucker (Un, not Trump) round the negotiating table and see what's up.

Has been tried with the motherfucker's dad and it didn't really work.
It was all "we wants the money America, or we fuck you up".

All the 6+1 negotiations and oil and food deliveries merely gave them enough time to develop nukes.

I doubt that NK will give up their nuclear weapons without war. I hope it never comes to that.

You misspelled 'Truman administration'.

And something was done - the US took direct military action, and couldn't win.

What should Clinton (or any POTUS since Eisenhower) have done that they didn't do? Why do you single out Clinton in particular?

He is playing the game his dad did but I can't see him getting much in the way of concessions from Trump. Moreover, I see Trump trying to pressure others not to acquiesce.
Set up for shock and awe and give Kim the option of living out his life in comfortable obscurity in China or Indiana or someplace. He's yet to really live his life. Of course, once we set up for shock and awe, well...

This is a good article about the problem and possible resolutions to the problem. None of the proposed resolutions are good, which is precisely why the can has been kicked from administration to administration.

I don't know, but Trump declared this a national day of prayer and attended church before going to meet with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Trump is a self-described Presbyterian but does not attend church regularly.
I wonder if he's about to "get religion".

That's a really good read. Thanks for posting it.

One shortcoming not mentioned in the article is that most of trump's supporters will never read it and come to understand the situation. Most of them will react the way radicals wanted Kennedy to deal with the missiles in Cuba, just take them out.

The article is correct in stating that no U.S. President is going to come out and SAY that our best option is to allow North Korea to develop and deploy nuclear weapons that can hit cities across the globe, even thought that is exactly what all of them have been doing for decades.

Short of some new fantastically successful technology North Korea will develop and deploy a potent nuclear arsenal that it will never use because that is the best option of all options presently available.

Yes, Trump followers are the "Let's nuke those chinks/sand niggers/whatever (but not Russians) into a glass parking lot" variety. This is a common theme in the south and has been for decades. Simple solutions by simple people that do not understand nuance, complexity, or repercussions.

Yeah, i recently read a story about 9-11, what options they were considering as a response to the 9-11 attack. One adviser suggested bombing ....... South America. I am not kidding. Apparently there are places with large number of immigrants from ME there. All or most Shia but national security adviser did not know about difference between shia and sunni.
With Trump administration I would not be surprised if they are considering nuking .... South America.

Looks like you are supporting nuking .... russians.

In fact the North Korean leader is a crazy fundamentalist religious supremacist nutcase as dangerous as his religious counterparts elsewhere.

Hey, I resent that. I understand nude dance, complexion, and percussion.

Hardly. These people USED to support nuking Russians, but have changed their tune as of late.
Yeah, seemed pretty clear to me. You're mocking people who have let Trump change their mind on what they used to consider their core beliefs, and not because of any rational argument or objective evidence...

I'm still not getting the sense that the crazy leader of North Korea has any designs on world domination or nuking anybody or any sort of outward aggression. I still believe that he wants to look tough and show off his "nuclear arsenal" to dissuade invasion of his country. He is after all the remaining Axis of Evil country, yes? Having nuclear weapons or pretending to have them makes perfect sense for him. I'd do the same in his shoes.
