I flew through there (as a passenger) back in the mid 1990s, in full daylight. It was seriously in-your-face; I have never before or since seen locals waving to me as an incoming passenger, from their balconies above the aircraft.
There's an urban myth about a 747 landing there with somebody's laundry caught on the wingtip; it doesn't seem as far-fetched to me after that flight as it did beforehand.
